Can we find another circle to put people who use "times smaller" in, too? Like something that is 1/4 the size they say is "4 times smaller."

It is. And confusing as hell. I run into it on popular astronomy videos all the time. "Star X is only 90% of the size of star Y, but star Z is 4 times smaller." (Is star Z 60% of the size of star Y, 50% of the size of star Y, 25% of the size of star Y, or 22.5% of the size of star Y?)

I really, really hate "stan" used to mean "be a big fan of." Like, "oh, her new single is amazing, I totally stan her now!" Because it comes from the Eminem song "Stan" wherein the eponymous narrator KILLS HIS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND. Why do you want to associate with someone like that?

It just gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I don't understand stan. Like is it meant to refer to superfans or toxic fans or people who hate shit? I have seen it used in a number of different ways and since I wasn't disaffected enough in my suburban high school to listen to Eminem I have no frame of reference.

It's a self-reference for superfans (people say it about themselves), but they're frequently asshole toxic fans.

The examples I've seen have almost always been pejorative, implying "crazy and unjustifiable support of", like Trump and Polanski apologists.

You do get the people who self-deprecatingly call their support crazy and obsessive by using it, which starts the process of muddling things.

I've only seen "stan" as positive.

I also thought (and a few friends I asked agreed with me) that it was just a shortening of "stand behind" or "stand up for".

This used to be the case but in the past couple of years it’s opened up to really just mean “fan” in all circumstances. On a site like Twitter, it would be weird to say “fan” and not “stan” at this point. Or it would be weird to say “support” or “like” and not “stan.” “We stan a {x} queen” for example is a common construction.

Haha yeah I’m not surprised but it’s definitely from the Eminem song.

Stan is 100% a reference to the crazed fanboy from the Eminem song.

I'm not sure. I think maybe I was cancelling DAR because nicole's a woman? Or possibly because I'm not a centaur? I've kind of lost track of the gender trends on Grylliade.

HAIRCUT!!!

Telly… you remember, the deceitful barber with a shriveled soul who, just a few weeks ago, cut perfect scientist Carlos’s perfect, beautiful hair very short, so very, very short, thus depriving our community of our only remaining pleasure… well, Telly was seen recently wandering the sand wastes, howling at the sky, and holding up Carlos’s shorn locks as though begging God to reverse the crime he has done. Reports indicate that his skin was blistering, that his eyes were bleary, and that he was recently seen trying to give a cactus a haircut, whispering and cooing into what he seemed to think was its ear.

Listeners, I am not one to stand aside harshly and say that a man deserves the punishment that comes to him, but I also am not sorry to see Telly in this state, given his crime. In any case, if your cactus is in need of a haircut, try Telly, out wandering the sand wastes.
