The royal wedding thing is the closest I get to being one of those “sportsball” people. Fucking why.

The story of Aaron Schlossberg (racist lawyer who lost his shit and threatened to call ICE on people he heard speaking Spanish) is another one of those boggle-my-mind issues. (Especially since the website of his soon-to-be-defunct law firm boasts of speaking Spanish, among other languages.) If hearing people speak a language other than English fills you with such rage --- how the hell did you make it this long in Manhattan without working yourself into apoplexy? That's like trying to live in Georgia if you're enraged by the sight of kudzu.
Dude's racist enough to work in the Trump White House, but he'd fly off the handle every time somebody started speaking Russian. Sucks to be him.

Countries need their patriotic symbols. The Brits have quite brilliantly separated theirs from actual governance.

Americans could use some sort of non-governing national father figure that they could stare at pictures of while masturbating with American flags. Maybe do a joint head of state situation, with the office shared between a diverse NPR host/best-selling author and a country singer/military veteran.

Either that or arrange a marriage between a Bush and a Kennedy.

Because many, many (not to be confused with "all") women want to be a princess on their wedding day and here's somebody who's more-or-less becoming a princess on her wedding day.

In absolute numbers, I suspect there are more wackaloon Americans than Brits when it comes to the Royals.

The modern presidency is founded on FDR being a king on radio and even more so, JFK & Jackie being a King and Queen on TV.

eta - actually, that's kinda unfair to both of them, because Washington started most of the royal trappings stuff, to fill a perceived (and probably real) vacuum.

It's the world's longest running soap opera, with money, sex, divorces and (dare I say it?) a whiff of murder.

Of course, it would help if the lead roles were played by better-looking people.

I still fall into the "IDGI" camp. To paraphrase Tom Paine, they're a big deal because they're descended from a French bastard who landed with an armed gang about a thousand years ago. I would hope humanity could move beyond that kind of thing.

I also feel like there's a large overlap between people who fap over the royal wedding and people who bitch about American society paying too much attention to Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian and other "famous for being famous" rich people.

I think much of it is the fairy tale aspect of it. It's the closest thing to a real life version of the stories everyone hears when they're young.

And when it inevitably fails to satisfy and falls apart, everyone can dish on it together.

I don't get the idea that this would be any better or improve the US. We'd just have stuff like the royal weddings, just mixed with all the idiocy of US politics.

I feel like that makes sense though because the point is that Americans are too pedestrian to have royals and have super tacky nouveau riche celebrities instead.

What always struck me was that Americans will typically go gaga over the royal Brits, but you never hear a peep about royal Scandinavians.

My guess is that it's a combination of the language barrier and the fact that modern American culture is a "direct descendant" of Britain -- even nth-generation Minnesotans of 100 percent pure Scandinavian heritage likely know more about British culture and history than Scandinavian.

I generally don't give a damn what British royalty is up to, but this latest wedding has white supremacists so butthurt-upset I find myself rooting for it anyway.

That sort of thing is the nature of this thread though. There's some kind of "it" that someone doesn't get.

It's a thing that the patriarchy makes women do but I'll be dammed if I can actually figure out what it is. I listened to a whole podcast with women listening to examples and talking about the social implications, but I still have no idea.
