They should be much more concerned about the planned lander mission to Europa.
You think the Chinese are going to beat us to it?
ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE.
Uh huh. Did you read the book?
Yep. And, god help me, 2063.

Given that Chaffetz has made exactly that argument before, that's what makes it obvious.

Bonus hypocrisy points: remember how, just before he resigned from Congress, Chaffetz also argued that members of Congress should get an extra $2500 per month as a housing stipend? Because it's unreasonable to expect poor struggling Congressmen to pay for their own housing, not on a salary of only $174,000 per year.

Uh huh. Except what I actually heard him say was that they should use an iPhone 5. This is the same argument once leveled at new Nikes. And frankly I agree. It's about priorities. It's not unreasonable for a homeless person to have a smartphone. Indeed obtaining a smartphone would seem an essential step in becoming nonhomeless. However, if a homeless person is buying the latest iPhone, footwear, etc. they are mismanaging their money. Or they're making a lifestyle choice, in which case waddayawant from me?

He actually said "“Maybe rather than getting that new iPhone” Americans “should invest in their own healthcare”. Do you think the price differential between a new iPhone versus an older one is enough to cover the cost of health insurance + out-of-pocket healthcare costs -- or, conversely, that Americans with new-gen iPhones are the only ones who can't afford healthcare costs?

Had Chaffetz never made that asinine comment, I would not have made a snarky post about how that homeless person only got that way via blowing the housing money on a cellphone -- but Chaffetz would still be a despicable human being for posting that photo with that comment anyway.

You can get a smart phone for under $50. People donate old phones to the homeless. And NYC has free municipal wifi. That picture proves fuck all.

Let's not forget that Chaffetz was the guy who thought the government should pay for his housing in DC, despite making over $160K year. Though I could totally go for a Congressional dorm.

A *new* iPhone is $600. If I renew my contract with VZN they'll sell one for half that.

Yes, a new $300-600 phone is a luxury when you can get one for < $100.

On the other hand, if that phone and service let you search for jobs or maintain a support network to overcome a lack of resources in your rural community, that's a great use of money.

Semifamous Blogger Scott Alexander is a psychiatrist who has worked in mental hospitals.

He wrote a post somewhere talking about asking a mentally ill homeless guy why he didn't want to take more advantage of being kept in a nice inside facility where he'd be housed and fed and clothed.

And the guy said "Out there I don't have a house but I can get on the internet. I'd rather be homeless with a laptop than housed where I'm not allowed computer access."

And Scott thought about this for a bit and concluded that he probably felt the same way.

In my experience that is the choice most people make. The internet, like The Church, is the people, not the building.
