You're thinking of Orkut. Friendster, IIRC, got really hot in SE Asia. Specifically the Philippines and Malaysia.

I was never on Friendster but I remember that it spawned Dogster.

Friendster or GTFO.
Was that the one that got taken over by Brazilians, or was it the Google one named after the guy who first developed it, whose name I can't remember?
People who start online communities and name them after themselves are total weirdos.

I take it you'd rather not be invited to join chezwarren.net?

That’s right. I got so many friend requests from Brazilians sho apparently only spoke and wrote Brazilian Portuguese before I finally shut it down.

I'm trying to buy some Bitcoin so I can pay for something online with it. I feel very confused. I signed up for Coinbase but it wouldn't let me link my bank account, so now I'm waiting for gdax to confirm my identity via driver's license and awkward selfie.

That's odd. Any idea why you couldn't link your account? You should be using the same account for both Coinbase and gdax.

It's less stupid than "cloud," but I suspect that's only because it hasn't been used as stupidly, yet.

There's real pressure for developers and miners to get together on something intelligent. But I haven't heard of anything positive on that front. I did hear that there's an upcoming fork they're calling segwit2x that's nothing like segwit2x. The longer this goes on the more people are going to turn to ETH and BCH. Other alt coins might even join the top tier.

Same as every prohibition. Total failure to achieve the intended consequences, while driving people into a black market and it's associated unintended consequences.
Crypto will be a jillion times worse than drugs, because most people buy into "drugs are bad" but in the coming years no one will respect crypto prohibition.
