That reminds me a little of my bank's app. You can download the app from the app store, but once you've downloaded it, it handles its own updating. Firstly, why the fuck would you reinvent the wheel like that, but more importantly, what this means is that the app only updates when you run it, i.e. EXACTLY WHEN YOU WANTED TO USE IT instead of trying to use it and then being app-blocked by an update that you then have to sit around and wait for.

I got an Acer Chromebook a couple years ago and I've loved it. Long battery life and super durable (it got dropped more times than I can count, plus left on a hot burner once and slightly melted). It finally fell victim to a liquid spill and got fried, so I cashed in on the device protection I'd bought, and they sent me an apparently-identical replacement.

Except. Chrome SUCKS on this one. If you click away from a tab and then click back -- even if you open a new blank tab and immediately close it -- it reloads the page. There's no way to turn this off. And it gets the "oh, snap!" page crash frequently, even if you only have one tab and no other programs open.

And of course I can't just use a different browser, because ... Chromebook.

Oh fuuuuuuu. That has to be doubly annoying if you're bookfacing because of its exceptionally annoying habit of changing content every time you reload the page. So if you click away and want to go back to what you were looking at, it's gone.

Yes! Or if I'm writing a comment and I unthinkingly open a new tab (to check a spelling or find a photo or whatever), I lose whatever I'd written.

It's a pain everywhere but it's extra painful on Facebook.

I did (or some similar site with the same recommendations) -- but the flag is not available on my new Chromebook's version of Chrome, and the auto-discard toggle doesn't change anything. *kicks pebble*

People complaining about airplane recliners are the worst. Airlines shrunk seats because people didn’t want larger seats. If you want more leg room, airlines have created a class between coach and business class that is a relatively reasonable cost above. I get it, flying sucks, but the real issue is armrests, to which there’s never been a good solution (aside from middle seat gets first dibs on armrests), not size.

Piffle. On next to no flights is there any option besides sardine class, save that if you book early enough you can get the seat over the wing with the exit or the front row of seats.

Most of the flights I've booked lately have had three different classes of seats in the main cabin, I think. I get the cheapest because I've never had an airline seat with insufficient legroom, but that's a function of both my height and the way I tend to sit.

I don't understand why the airlines don't simply give each seat its own armrest, as movie theaters do (though of course the airline armrests would have to be much skinnier than the ones in the theaters).

Every major (non-discount) airline has a premium economy class that’s between regular economy and first class. And for longer flights there’s premium economy, business and first class.

I was all set to go out and make some final grocery trip, intending to be the last one Jeff or I would make in two weeks ... aaaand my car won't start.

{Admission: I am at least fortunate to be in a position where this is merely a "petty annoyance" rather than a "major financial catastrophe," anyway.}

I suppose it's petty for now, but woke up to the home internet down. And Verizon support has reduced their hours to nine on Sunday.

Ugh. I hope it comes back soon, Highway. I forget: are you working in-office or at home, nowadays?

No, not back up yet, and I mistyped my previous post. Verizon support has zero hours of operation on Sunday. So haven't even been able to report an outage. Or get them to just, you know, reset the server that I am supposed to connect to.

Our Fire TV stick refuses to finish booting. It just stays at the "fireTV stick" logo screen forever. The logo animation does continue, so it's not 100% frozen, but it never progresses past that point. None of the troubleshooting tips have helped.
"Just let it run and it will eventually finish" - we've left it for days and it hasn't progressed.
"Try a different TV/different HDMI port" - done that, doesn't help.
"Try a different power adapter" - (really? other than the one it's been working fine with for months?) done that, doesn't help.
"Reset it using the remote" - somewhat embarrassingly, we lost the remote, and the smartphone app doesn't work this early in the boot process. I'm not really sure the remote would even have worked, though.
We broke down and bought a new one, but I'm pissed that Amazon did not see fit to include a physical reset button on the thing.

Fuuuu. My iMac has an internal 250GB SSD, so I got a 1TB external drive for it when I bought it. Everything worked fine until I upgraded the OS and now my 1TB drive is "read only" because it's formatted for windows (so why did it work before?).

I've got 275GB of stuff on it and nowhere to put it while I reformat the drive. *sigh*

I think I'm going to try to upgrade my dropbox for a month free and cancel as soon as I get my drive reformatted. Sometime when I've got time and attention to focus on what I'm doing. Ack!

After a very frustrating afternoon yesterday I've come to realize that between OS upgrades and/or older software and crazy high resolutions I have completely lost the ability to simply take a video with the phone and edit it on the (Late 2011) lappy. Used to be a snap. Oh, and fuck apple for *still* ramming .mov up our asses. Even though their own quicktime won't open most of my older .mov's anymore. Just went to check app store and it won't let me re-download iMovie (had deleted to save space and because it also had become so much suckier) because I'm one measly OS upgrade behind, so I can't even check if that would work.

Ever since Snow Leopard everything Apple has gone so downhill I'm seriously contemplating Ubuntu (if that's still a thing, it's been prolly 6 years since I looked at it). I'm sure it will be a pain, but at least it's not pretending that it shouldn't be, which I think I will find less annoying.

This is exactly the kind of thing that is driving me away from Apple.

The only thing that kept me getting iPhones is that my wife has Samsung/Android and it's somehow even *more* of a shitshow.
