Yep, plastic bags in the ocean killing wildlife is totes cool as long as you're not directly responsible.

Maybe I should rethink my stance against drone strikes since I'm not the one piloting them and pulling the trigger.

Unless it can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that your plastic bag wound up inside a whale I don't see why you should care. Just accept that democracy and/or the free market will decide the optimal number of plastic bags that wind up in wildlife, and neither is to be second guessed.

Worthwhile intertubez finds

I’ve said it before when he was on Slate, Isaac Chotiner is an amazing interviewer. He gives his subjects enough rope to hang themselves and doesn’t ask showy questions.
BEE: Did she say that? That she didn’t know she was black?

IC: You say it in the book.

BEE: Yeah, right, I quoted her.

I think there is some value in determining if there's any chance that one's plastic bag will end up in any whale or other wildlife to determine whether your plastic baggery should be forcibly curtailed. A federal system can have states determine whether there's externality from plastic bags that requires interference. MO and CO are probably pretty safe so long as trash isn't hauled to coastal areas. California or Florida might need to take a much harder look at the environmental consequences of large scale plastic-film sack use.

So that dude in American Beauty was apparently just filming an environmental catastrophe?

I haven't seen the film, but I think that's the general consensus with hindsight, at least by Oscar winner standards.

alhough obvs I think you could say 'problem' without meaning 'catastrophe'

I was only responding to the claim that throwing your plastic bags in the trash causes no harm. Demonstrably false with a 10 second search.

But we're all agreed that American Beauty turned out to be an environmental disaster, right?

Did someone say it was totes cool, or just that none of us have any say about how Asian countries dispose of plastic waste?

This is mine

IC: you said that progressive movements become “as authoritarian as what they’re protesting,” and that “it’s happened to a degree with the #MeToo movement. The idea of sexual assault and violence against women is reprehensible. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t accept that.” Can—

BEE: Agreed. Agreed.

IC: Well, you said it—of course you agree.

BEE really comes off as an aloof douche in that interview.

YMMV of course but that's not how I read it. BEE seemed to spend the entire interview being like, "Politics are dumb! Why does everyone keep asking me about politics?" and IC is like, "Because you just wrote an entire book about politics, you enormous walnut"

Yeah no. If you throw your plastic bag in the trash in the good ole USofA it winds up in a landfill where it does no harm. Some tiny fraction of plastic bags used in coastal regions might escape the trash and some even tinier fraction of bags thrown in the trash might escape the landfill. None of the bags I have ever or will ever bring my groceries home in wind up in the ocean. Zero. Whales are not choking on US waste.
