In the eventually inevitable Stripes 2, there needs to be a scene with soldiers running to cadences like "I don't know but it's been said, Sgt. Jones gives real good head; Sgt. Jones says all the brass, would rather take it in...." and so forth. [Insert "rough/muff," etc. lines to ensure evenhanded homophobic humor.]

Don't much like the impetus for it, but due to budget constraints, Mitch Daniels is working with Pew to completely revamp Indiana's sentencing and incarceration practices. Hopefully, this catches on in other states and allows people to do this without being labeled "soft on crime".

Maybe perhaps possibly the Supreme Court is willing to walk back the 'drug war exception' to the 4th amendment

Some justices seemed troubled by the prospect of police wandering halls - "They go to the apartment building and they sniff at every door," Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg proposed - to find cause to search.

Speaking of something that db of c brought up in another thread:
Legislation introduced by Virginia state Senator Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax) would have classified card games like poker and blackjack as games of skill, making them legal to play for money in the commonwealth.
The Democratic burgess wrote:"I'm coming at it from the libertarian perspective that playing cards for money, particularly between friends, should not be quote-unquote illegal wagering under the law,"
It didn't pass, so it's not much. But it's not nothing either.

Color coded terror threat level to be discontinued. Of course, idiots still defend its creation.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said the old threat system served a valuable purpose in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but that a more targeted system was needed.
No it didn't. I'd like King to name one useful thing that came about from it.

Changing the alert level distracted the citizens from GWB's incoherent foreign policy (Look over there! Muslim terrrorists!).
I'm surprised the Obama administration isn't continuing it for the same purpose.

Temecula city council votes unanimously in favor of permit to build a mosque despite strong opposition from bigots:

http://www.latimes.
com/news/local/la-me-0127-temecula-mosque-20110127,0,2743329.story

To their credit, the City Council tried to stay entirely focused on mundane issues of traffic and zoning, the bread and butter issues, despite the bigots trying to make this about their Islamophobia.

Is Temecula the one with the Kenny Rogers Casino? Or is that Barona?

The NYPD was called to a domestic disturbance, where a man grabbed a sword and began screaming and brandishing the sword at them. Amazingly, they did NOT shoot him or even taser him, but talked him into putting it down. A rare case of a tense situation well handled without resorting to overwhelming force.

Reminds me of a favourite smoking gun story from a few years ago:

http://www.thesmokinggun.
com/documents/crime/crusader-nabbed-michigan-cops
Medieval sword, mallet, armor no match for ye olde Taser

AUGUST 5--Meet Robert McClain. The Michigan man, 42, was arrested last week after he attempted to literally go medieval on cops. According to the below Royal Oak Police Department report, officers were dispatched to McClain's home after a motorist called 911 to report that McClain had fled the scene of an auto accident. When they arrived at his crib, McClain allegedly tried to strike a cop with a four-foot sword. After missing, McClain retreated to his basement, where he donned a chainmail armored vest and leather gauntlets to protect his arms. He also added a giant wooden mallet to his arsenal and beckoned officers to come downstairs and get him. 'I'm gonna crush your fucking skulls,' McClain warned. Then, in a nice rhetorical flourish (for a lunatic, at least), he added, 'I have a thousand years of power.' That omnipotence, however, was no match for a police Taser, which felled McClain. He was then carted off and charged with felony assault and a misdemeanor count for failing to remain at an accident scene. (3 pages)

Another such case, from Redneck, SC:
The State Paper wrote:A Kershaw County sheriff’s captain shot a man with a beanbag from a shotgun after he allegedly threatened a deputy with butcher knives over the weekend, said Sheriff Jim Matthews this morning.
In a different report, I'd seen that his family were around and knew he needed to be arrested, had no problem with that part, but were thankful that the deputies used restraint.

Will someone please set DOMA on fire? The whole thing. If you haven't seen it up close, you wouldn't believe how much paperwork it creates. Insurance are regulated by states which set domestic partner / same sex rules on their own, but benefits plans are largely regulated under ERISA which makes them subject to DOMA. Beneficiary designation is a freaking nightmare. So are annuities tied to retirement plans.

This is pretty cool. It will also be useful for Americans dealing with the police as well.

I highly doubt that the government-developed version will be available at the App Store any time soon. You can already reset your iPhone with a few swipes and taps, but a panic button app that would be able to do it with a single command (or remotely via coded text) would be invaluable.

There is an Android app called TheftAware (made by a German software company, I believe) that can do exactly that via SMS.

State government, that is, and only vis a vis the federal government:
Tom Edwards, the county attorney in rural Motley County east of Lubbock, said on Friday that the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives was responsible on Tuesday for sparking a fire that consumed 150 acres.

"You can quote me on it: That bunch has a real corner on stupid," Edwards told Reuters.
