MAGA Teen Hunger Force

Post by thoreau »

The Covington story just won't go away. One of the kids is speaking at the RNC next week.

https://thehill.com/homenews/media/5124 ... convention

I wish the kid would have just walked away from this, but no, he's going to go full kulturkampf.

gotta have a money funnel somewhere, and uh...it probably pays additional bills above and beyond whatever he had left from the settlements after lawyer fees and negotiations.

From a twitter thread I read, he's been crowing about winning a settlement from CNN and WaPo for his defamation lawsuits, but it was pretty convincingly argued that the Post just paid him "go away" money in the settlement, instead of paying their lawyers more. And of course, the MAGAs are all in on "See, they admit they were wrong in their coverage!"

Other RNC speakers will include the crazy gun-toting couple from St. Louis. No doubt their speech will be applauded by those who believe cops did good in killing Tamir Rice.

Consider this from the perspective of the 80% of the country who pays no attention whatsoever to this inside baseball crap. This convention is going to be fucking incomprehensible to them. "So, the speakers are a guy who was waving a gun at protesters, a kid who got yelled at, and some random chick who worked at Planned Parenthood?"

I get the kid. But the St. Louis couple? Whatever justification they may have had they just looked unhinged and panicky (also unsafe). Not exactly the image I would want for anything.

When your candidate is a Twitter troll, you get an internet kulturkampf convention.

Needs Kim Davis or the Colorado Wedding Cake guys to complete the set.

Do they make the libs angry? Yes. They are the image the GOP wants for everything.

If they're going to invite anyone who generates outrage on the internet, I suppose that some worms and/or biologists will be invited.

Lame ass aggressive drum solos are an institution. I don't remember anyone ever proposing that they're not okay, but I haven't been making the meetings since they went to zoom.

Maybe so, but to the anti-2A crowd, they're Willie Horton.

They're not, though. They're just some randos that caused a Twitter stir. Only maybe 1 in 20 people would know anything about them, and only their supporters view it as anything other than "yet another Real Story of the Karen Patrol." This is built around "we hate the right people, watch us trigger the libs" but they're so up their own ass, they don't even grasp that the targets that rile up their base aren't the same as the ones that their enemies hate. Meaning, they're putting out something that's going to make as much sense for crossover voters as Schizoaffective Sam's Schizoid Scribings, and they're not even going to get that good a reaction from the targets.

I was thinking of it more in terms of gun control advocates saying "This is what gun owners are like."

guy on Safari, who when travelling through the jungle hears some incredible drumming coming from a distance. The following conversation ensues with his local guide:

Guy: Wow! That's amazing -- let's see if we find it!
Guide: No! We must go now -- when drums stop, big trouble!
Guy: But the drumming sounds amazing, I really want to check it out
Guide: No -- we must go, when drums stop, big trouble!
Guy: But this is the kind of thing I came here to experience! I really want to hear it!
Guide: No! We must go before drums stop!
Guy: But why? What happens when the drums stop?
Guide: Bass solo!!

Unfortunately, enough loud gun guys have piped up about how they were folks just protecting themselves from the Jacobin hordes out to kill them that it won't be hard to push that narrative. This is just the culmination of that own-goal.

Jonathan Turley points to an ACLU staffer going after a college that had the audacity to admit Nick Sandmann:

https://jonathanturley.org/2020/09/08/a ... s-conduct/

Obligatories: The university has the right to admit the kid, and the critic has the right to criticize, and the kid has the right to attend. So everyone is within their rights. And the critic makes it clear in his Facebook post that he's not speaking for the ACLU. And of course he isn't asking for coercive punishment, he's just asking for a private institution to make a discretionary decision consistent with his preferences. And of course he has the right to say that, and they have the right to disregard, and yadda yadda.

All that said, it's kind of disappointing that an ACLU staffer is OK with going there. I would have hoped he'd be a bit more tolerant here. Yes, he has the right to not be tolerant, but still.

I don't claim to know Sandmann's future, but I've been hoping he could become less of a kulturkampf pawn. He has some responsibility for his ongoing kulturkampf pawn status, of course, having accepted an RNC speaking invite, but that doesn't mean everyone else needs to keep pushing him around that board. I'd prefer if everyone kind of left him alone and he became a normal college kid and his future path was based on something other than one afternoon of footage from that protest last year.
