Bevin was remarkably unpopular among his own party. He actively tried to poo on the Rs in the legislature.

There seems to be a consensus among the professional talker classes that the new Democratic reps who flipped red districts in 2018 need to distance themselves from impeachment talk, in part because of their organizational inertia toward relying on past voting patterns (Cook's Report, et al).

I think that's wrong and may prove disastrous for the resistance. Trump realigned the political spectrum on a lot of traditional blue/red issues and therefore I think it's an error to follow previous voting trends too closely like that. (I'm not saying he changed everything, but most relevantly he stole the white working class from the Dems in exchange for eroding support from the educated suburban voters).

More likely, those districts weren't flipped because ol' Nancy picked some rootin' tootin' good candidates this time, but rather, I wager a lot of those districts flipped because they were voting against Red, not for Blue. Those voters (especially the educated suburban, traditionally-R ones that went blue in 2018) sent those new reps to Washington to fight back against Trump*.

Point is, I think if these new Dems waffle on impeachment, they'll lose these traditionally Red districts in 2020 because the voters who sent them to fight Trump will be disillusioned by and disappointed in putting faith in Democrats...

*(this is also why an unusual number of freshmen Dems have national security backgrounds)

The most surprising thing is how many supposedly intelligent people that don't work for the administration are going with the Sideshow Bob defense.

My (Arlington) next-door neighbor's testimony.

Pp. 34-35 are pretty amusing. I haven't read the entire transcript.

Seems like it would be fun sport for congress to try and fuck him out of a book by squeezing him in a perjury trap. I guess subpoenas nowadays are merely ignorable suggestions, but if there were a way to get him testifying under oath he either has to fess up or subject himself to charges of perjury later if he tries to sell a book.

They're actually allowed to impose fines for failure to appear as they see fit. I'm a little surprised they haven't done it so far. They can also have the Sergeant-at-arms lock people up in the Congressional hoosegow, but only for as long as they're in session.

Have they ever actually done so for members of the political class?

As I recall, Congress was trying to impeach and remove the Postmaster General, and a witness failed to comply. The courts backed Congress.
