Obviously need to wait for some evidence and the circumstances surrounding it but as the saying goes don't assume malice when incompetence can explain it.

The guy was on suicide watch. He wanted to kill himself and he was a clever guy. It's not a big leap that he figured out someway to trick his watchers.

He may well have committed suicide. If I cared about the truth, I'd agree that caution is indicated, but in this particular case fuck that guy and fuck all the people he was in cahoots with.

Since my views re: both suicide and criminal law are well outside the Overton window, I have to ask whether people are actually upset about this development. I don't even understand the logic behind suicide watch in the first place.

I'm reading that he'd been off suicide watch for almost two weeks, after having only been on it for a week.

Personally, I'm pretty sure that he killed himself. He was apparently terrified of prison in general--and in particular, prison is dangerous for child molesters.

Of course, now Trump is tweeting Clinton conspiracy theories about it. Which, I guess makes him look strong that a president who hadn't even been in office this century got someone killed in the federal system he currently runs... :P

And elsewhere the Epstein thing brings out that segment of the left that really wants to make "libertarian == pedophile" happen. I started to get into it elsewhere in an Epstein thread with a few lefties who were claiming that "many libertarians" or "many—though not all—libertarians" are defenders of the guy, or that "libertarian first principles" require teenage slave-girl markets...but the bulk of the Blue folks just got annoyed at the lefties trying to bring libertarianism into a discussion that was already a rambling mess.

I'm actually quite open to the possibility that Epstein committed suicide.

Where I am wholly sold on some sort of conspiracy theory is in his original prosection. The prosecutor was hit with heavy pressure from above and gave a deal like nobody has ever gotten. Somebody clearly owed Epstein a favor.

I don't know if Epstein used blackmail, money, social connections, or whatever, but he had clout over someone and got a favor like no other perp has gotten before. Something shady as all hell went down.

Yes, yes, I know that some here are allergic to conspiracy theories, but when a rich guy has lots of important people at parties featuring underage girls, and then gets the most amazing deal ever, there was something shady. I'm not speculating about which important person did what for what reason, but somebody with clout owed Epstein big-time.

I'm not sure that someone putting pressure to give Epstein a sweetheart deal in the first place counts as a "conspiracy theory". It's just straightforward corruption, and the sort that usually is just a component of a bigger conspiracy claim.

I would be surprised if there had been zero suicides in any group, let alone people imprisoned for criminal charges. I suspect the incidence of depression and other disturbance among prisoners would be much higher than the norm.

Fun fact.
I graduated from Monroe Community College aka MCC aka Mickey Mouse U.
I don't remember any suicides on campus. But it was mostly a Liberal Arts school, so it's not like classes were all that difficult :P

There were usually one or two suicides a year at my college, occasionally more. The subject matter is less important than the rigor, grading standards and peer pressure college students face. In particular, many students used to getting straight As who suddenly find that they're not even close to the top of their class conclude they're frauds and failures.

It may be that engineering curricula have such a reputation for difficulty that prospective engineers don't feel so bad about washing out, but I can assure you that humanities courses requiring thousands of pages of assigned reading and weekly written assignments graded for both content and composition in a classroom filled with valedictorians who start getting Cs will take its toll on some of them. There are liberal arts schools, e.g., Chicago, Swarthmore and the liberal arts schools at Carnegie Mellon and Johns Hopkins that are every bit the academic gauntlet as the average, especially the *average* engineering program.

Norm MacDonald has been all over this story for 20 years.

Ya know, my friend Jeff, he's not that bright. The third thing on his bucket list was "get murdered by the Clintons".

Also his watchers are members of the most callously-indifferent-to-their-charges profession since ever, and he's not just a sleaze who preyed on teen girls but a super rich privileged sleaze. So maybe they just weren't motivated to do their job well and kinda accidentally-on-purpose let it happen for no other reason than fuck him.

But he was the kind of guy who had his teenie porn on a disk labeled 'Young Girls Nude' so I could see the people he'd rat on thinking, 'there's no way he hid dirt on us where it could get leaked if he died,' and bribing the guards to look the other way while he committed suicide and/or bribing them to stage a suicide, or whatever.

Literally every possibility strikes me as plausible short of real actual ninjas or the Red Woman giving birth to a shadow murder baby.
