Well, he did. Eventually.

An editor [at the New Yorker] ... had rejected a story of mine by suggesting ... that psychological problems were preventing me from creating effective fiction.
They certainly appear to be preventing him from creating effective non-fiction.

(I could not get past the third paragraph of that. And it's about gay men! And I still got bored!)

but I don’t want someone who fills out his life like he fills out an AP exam serving as the country’s moral compass.
FFS people need to stop it already with the president being the national spiritual dear leader.

Also given our current administration couldn't we agree that someone who fills out his life like a damned grownup might maybe be a reasonable choice? It sure as hell shouldn't be a disqualifier.

More sickened by the idea of the president being a moral compass for fucking anyone. They kill people and alter the landscape of the world, like syphilis.

I don't like the concept of president or PM or whoever as a moral leader but it is a pretty deeply ingrained aspect of human nature. Most people want the leader of their tribe to be more than just the head bureaucrat who oversees both the benign and shitty aspects of running a government.

So the least bad approach seems to be separating the tribal figurehead role from the running shit role. Hence many countries have a separate head of state and head of government. The PM runs things and the monarch or president shows up to ceremonies.

I found that piece entertaining in a train-wreck-y way until he actually got to talking about Buttigieg, at which point it just felt too gross for me to want to read it.

Nicole: I definitely have no idea who he is.

I mean, Wikipedia says:
Dale Peck (born 1967) is an American novelist, critic, and columnist. His 2009 novel, Sprout, won the Lambda Literary Award for LGBT Children's/Young Adult literature, and was a finalist for the Stonewall Book Award in the Children's and Young Adult Literature category.
I have read a tiny bit of YA stuff just because I like SF/fantasy and easy reads are good for bedtime reading, but LGBT YA literature is a pretty specific genre, and novelists aren't REALLY celebrities until they start getting a lot of movies made from their stuff, and even then only sometimes. No I hadn't heard of him.

At this point in its once storied history, being famous for anything having to do with TNR is like being famous for leading the U.S. Olympic curling team.

Why is the gay version of Uncle Tom called a "Mary Pete"? I need to know the thought process behind this phrase, and why they settled on that instead of many superior options.

I need a "Making of" essay about this essay!

That's the problem with things arrived at by consensus, the thought process is diluted by the mob what spat it out.

I parsed it as “(courtesy title indicating gayness) (taking Pete from Buttigieg to mean all the not-gay-enough-stuff about him)”

Not sure if that’s clear enough to help
