I don't really see what the problem is. She can't afford two residences before the first paycheck arrives but has a good network so she's fine.
The problem is that, when a reporter asked her why she didn't immediately move to DC after winning the election, she mentioned the expense as a reason, and many people find this worthy of scorn.
Well, I neither scorn her for that nor pity her for it. And, fwiw, there are other members of Congress who share a residence in DC, even long-serving members. Alpha House is based on real people.

I start getting uncomfortable when people suggest that the utterances of political actors aren't worthy of scorn. Of course they are worthy of scorn. They say things for political reasons. Collisions with truth are incidental and reflected carnival mirror like into absurdities that suggest a favorable narrative. The counter narrative is also plenty scorn worthy because it too is a politically motivated story.

One of the things I hate about BHO, Trump and AOC is the suggestion that they are not political actors - that they reveal some truth about something something genuine. You know what's genuine? Nancy Pelosi. Mitch McConnell. They aint tryin' to fool nobody.

Again, the pretense that her situation is similar to the general public's doesn't hold up.
Again, she never represented it as being similar to a situation faced by the general public.
No, people in this thread arguing with me did.
I definitely view it as a situation where "the general public" is more likely to think "Yeah, I can see myself in a similar situation, especially at her age" as opposed to "A 29-year-old who can't afford two apartments while simultaneously going three months without a salary??!! My God, how can I ever respect such a person?"
Most people, if they're feeling patient, gently go, "Well, can you stop renting the other apartment a couple hundred miles away so you can afford a place in the city where you're working?" while wondering why the Hell this hasn't occurred to the person they're talking to. Or they wonder, after hearing this acquaintance talk over the course of months and months about her efforts to try to get this job in another city, why she hadn't put aside any money to tide herself over to the first paycheck. (In fact, they probably drop a few hints to this effect over those months.) And that's about as close as her very particular situation can get to anything "the general public" experiences—that one acquaintance with self-inflicted financial problems who ends up Ebaying all their belongings or couch-surfing.

And yes, when she's part of the class of people who want to run the fucking country, "You didn't think of this?" is a perfectly valid question. She's not some random person living her life, she's one of the people who thinks they should be able to control how everyone else lives their lives.

I don't think empathy on that scale is a thing, jen.
The sneers I've seen basically boil down to "She should be able to handle this with no difficulty"
Considering that in the exact same tweet that she announced the problem, she said "don't worry btw - we're working it out!" it doesn't sound like there WAS that much difficulty in handling it. And yet it's also simultaneously a huge systematic problem, according to her. But don't worry. Btw.
So, if I have a problem but I find a way to make it work, that means it wasn't actually worthy of the "problem" label? If I have skin cancer but they manage to cut it off without any further issues, does that mean melanoma isn't a huge problem?

Yes they are, which is the source of the difficulty here. A normal person could just sell their house or break their lease, and not have to worry about two residences.

Oh, right, because anyone who can organize and win a campaign for Congress will wind up with all sorts of friends in the DC area, and not just the shady kind.
Do you want to be encouraging legislators to avail themselves of favors from random people? That's why I want them living in dorms; the fewer chances they have to sneak bribes away from the watchful eye of their constituents, the better.

she is super hot. i think that's a good 50% of the appeal.

the other 50% is everyone wants a trump. someone who's gonna promise you whatever you want and that *those fuckers* will pay for it.

also jacking up the price of insulin is either some last ditch attempt to milk money before whatever medicare4apocalypse is coming or pharma bruhs being pharma bruhs. (or both, frankly)

I can't deny the hotness. Also, she looks crazy good in white and ivory. I'm so jealous. I secretly wish I could have an eccentric expensive all-white wardrobe, but I would just look like a hotel chef with consumption.

Kinda my take on the macro Ellie dropped. Absent whatever sportsbar context it has, it just looks like some young guys staring after her.

I did like the version w/o the captions that someone said it looked like a Norman Rockwell painting.

I stopped a second, recalling that there's the very amusing Accidental Renaissance subreddit, and I searched.

Of course there's an Accidental Norman Rockwell one.

Interestingly, during the primary (the only race that mattered, since the general election was guaranteed to go to the Blue) AOC did best in whiter, gentrified neighborhoods, and Crowley did best in poorer, non-white neighborhoods.

https://theintercept.com/2018/07/01/oca ... blishment/

There's a certain type of white liberal who desperately needs to been as the sort of person who supports a person like AOC.
