Trump-like is the new Congresswoman

Post by thoreau » 29 Dec 2018, 19:50

A thread for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.

Between the Twitter feuds, the boasting, and the batshit economic plan she's basically Trump, just with a lower net worth* and more estrogen.

My fear is that she'll serve a couple terms in Congress, then do reality TV, then become President.

*Though with his debts who knows? Maybe she's worth more than him.

I haven't seen anywhere near Trumpian levels of malice or narcissism, though -- especially considering their respective ages.

Give her 20 years in Congress* and I'll guarantee she achieves Pelosi levels of arrogance. Whether she learns some basic economics in that time is an open question. I think she's a little smarter than Trump, though.

*Given the way her district votes, she's guaranteed re-election unless she's primaried.

She’s probably not nearly as mean but she’s every bit as stupid.

Even Pelosi-level arrogance isn't nearly as bad as Trumpian malice and narcissism. (For that matter, I can't think of any successful American politician in living memory who's remotely that bad.)

She does not warrant her own thread. People making her a thing is why she is a thing.

Can we at least have one for the dead pimp elected to the Nevada legislature?

Steve King is more worthy of a thread. But he’s such a shitbag, id prefer to pretend he doesn’t exist.

More worthy, but he doesn't have one, because he's covered like any other idiot congressman. Which is yet more evidence AOC's coverage is Fox News narrative driving.

This is about my take on her. She's being seized upon by people on both teams to embody what they want her to embody. In ten years, we might never hear about her.

On a larger scale, we could probably merge a lot of longer active threads with the DOOOM thread and put it safely behind the curtain. Thoreau might never manage to post outside that thread, but some things can't be helped...

And that's not to say I don't mind many of the things Thoreau minds. I've just lost track of who's supposed to doom us all first, Trump, Russia, the SJWs, one overhyped congresswoman, the <can't say it in the public forum>, the <can't say this, either>, etc.

As the shutdown drags on, she'll refuse her salary, be kicked out of her apartment and starve to death on principle. Problem solved.

Unlike most congresscritters, she has not been in office for several years to build up an insulating layer of blubber.

Can someone please tell me why I am supposed to care if Alexandria Ocasio Cortez can dance?

I haven't seen the video, but she can probably dance better than I can, just like 95% of the human race.

In 2016 they told us that Hillary Clinton would put a taco truck on every corner.

Now they are saying that the Democrats will also give us videos of attractive women* dancing.

I might have to vote a straight ticket.

*Say what you will about her now, but she was decent in that video.

She's cute.

Also, it's really kind of disconcerting to have a (moderately prominent, even) congressperson who both is and acts like she is about my age.

I had to deal with the House Speaker being a Gen X dude from Wisconsin who likes 90's music.

Thing is, he mostly kept that aspect of himself off to the side. She puts her age and youthful demeanor front and center.

She's not the first Congressperson who's "about my age". There actually weren't any Congresspeople who were _younger than I am_ until this year, but there was a 1984 birthday elected in 2014.

But she's the first prominent one who prominently _feels_ my age. I look at all the stuff reported about her and say "Yeah, I can imagine having bumped into her at a party last year." Sure, I'd roll my eyes at her politics if they came up at that party, but I roll my eyes at lots of people's politics, so that's not surprising.

In the era of a reality TV star president, why not have a Congresswoman who seems like she should be the sassy leader of an underdog dance team in a movie?

I keep waiting for Anna Kendrick to team up with her.

Pssh. Alton Brown or someone from Mythbusters. In the latter case, preferably someone involved in that cannon incident and thus given a good scare about thoughtless use of power.

I feel like you lose a lot of “stop singling out millennials” cred if you then go AOC is acting just like people of my age group it’s awesome.

Also she’s a fucking moron.
