When I told my day care that we were moving to London, they said that 3 other families said were moving to Europe in the past few months. Seems like a pretty rapid clip for people skipping town.

It wouldn't surprise me if New England's economy is collapsing. I would be more surprised if Old England's economy (and the EU) wasn't.

The local economy is doing quite well, even despite the GE move. I'm in NYC suburbs more than "New England". Nicole doesn't even consider me a CT resident. lol

I don't think there is an official demonym for Connecticut dwellers. "Nutmeggers" (a riff off the "Nutmeg State" nickname) is officially considered rude.

When people sending kids to Mo's daycare move to Europe for work, it's generally because (as in Mo's case) they got a good opportunity to get international experience as a career-builder, not because the economy is bad and they need to escape.

Fucking jerks. We've a lovely little state that we've nearly bankrupted because we're economic morons.

Using "Nutmegger" was strongly discouraged when I was at the alt-weekly. You could say "fuck," but not "Nutmegger."

"Nutmeggers" brings spices to mind first.

I do say Nutmegger. I was also not ever taught that it was still insulting...I was taught that it had been but the whole story was so silly that it’s not anymore. So I say it but try to restrict it to when I’m talking to fairly well educated Americans, because other people aren’t going to know it.

"Nutmeggers" brings spices to mind first.
That's the point: according to legend, back in the days when spices were super-expensive, there were a lot of white people in what is now Connecticut who would scam traders by carving fake nutmegs out of wood. Hence, "Nutmeg State."

(My favorite "place name with a criminal history" story has to be regarding the coastal town of Nags Head, North Carolina: back in the day, or rather back in the nights, disreputable people on the shores of what is now called North Carolina's Outer Banks would tie a lantern around the neck of a tired old horse (or "nag") and walk the horse on the beach, so that faraway ships would see the bobbing lantern-light, think it another ship on the ocean, and thus run themselves aground.)

Nutmegger never seemed an insult. I think most folks have forgotten we were fraudsters back in the ball & musket days.

My U.K. immigration application asked me if I committed war crimes or acts of genocide. Who the fuck answers yes to that? Who is down with genocide, but draws the line at lying on an immigration form?
