on sale now, limited quantities available!

Post by the innominate one » 23 Nov 2017, 20:06

Does anyone have experience with selling things online?

Is ebay better or Amazon? Or Craigslist? or "other"?

I'm going to try to sell off some of my books and comic books to cut down on what I have to store and move around with me.

I'm not trying to make a fortune, just recoup some value, unless I find that any of the issues are particularly valuable (unlikely, as the back issues market has been in the toilet for years).

I used to sell on eBay a loooong time ago, before they required PayPal and other sundry things. From what I've heard, the changes since then make it very bad for small-time sellers. (At my consumer-writer job, I recall writing a few stories about lawsuits based on eBay's "seller is always wrong" policy -- basically, if I buy something from you on eBay, I can lie and claim to never have received it, and eBay WILL take my money back from you and refund it to me. IIRC, even instances such as "you KNOW I received the package because I had to sign a receipt for it" would not protect you. Any buyer can scam a seller with eBay's complete support.)

Thanks. If anyone else has any advice or experience, it would be much appreciated.

I thought I'd also point out that Google Play Store has an offer for $5 off any book over $5 and 50% off eligible movies, but the rewards must be claimed by November 27th and used by December 3rd.

I wish I could tell you something useful about the other possibilities you mentioned, but I can't; all I can say is, unless you are a bigga-time "power seller" (which you are not), stay the HELL away from eBay.

Maybe for small items, Craigslist is ok, but for anything that would cost upwards of 50-100 dollars, it's scammer central. "I"ll overpay you by check, can you give me some cash for the rest?" and then the check bounces, 3rd party purchase scammers, etc.

If you do sell on Craigslist then in addition to accepting cash-only, do NOT have the buyers come to your house or anything. Some police departments advertise their lobbies or parking lots as "safe spaces" for Craigslist transactions; maybe yours is one? (Even if not, I doubt a would-be criminal would agree to meet you at the police station.)

A little thread necromancy in order to bitch about my attempt to buy a $20 lamp off Craigslist.

Me: Is it still available? I can pick it up anytime that's convenient for you
Her: Yes, here's my address
Me: Would noon tomorrow work?
Her: Yes, but be sure to remind me tomorrow
Her (another email): Be sure to remind me tomorrow, I'm a senior so I need reminders
Me (8am that morning): See you at noon!

(I drive way the fuck up to the northern exurbs and she's not home. Her husband has no idea what I'm talking about.)

Her (emailing at 1pm): I got reminded too late. Hope you didn't drive too far. Let me know when you want it?

I WANTED IT AT NOON, DIPSHIT

In related news, I'm still in the market for a light-therapy lamp if anyone has one they're looking to unload ... :D

Two, in fact. Counting the one you're planning to break over her head.

Just as well you didn't get the first lamp, since it apparently turns its owners into blithering idiots.
