Fishing off the company pier makes work more likely to consume all.

Plus the logic is dumb. People have had long, happy relationships with people they dated from work, therefore there's nothing wrong with it. People have also had had long, happy relationships with their mistresses, would those same people say adultery is hunky dory? Or, "I've driven drunk and not had an accident, what's the big deal?"

Given a choice of things in that dopey tweet, we'd be a lot better off getting rid of "Work Consumes All" instead of "Don't Fish off the Company Pier".
Agree, but it's hard to get there from here.

I'm fine with parallel fishing at the bottom three or so rungs of the ladder, but I think it gets problematic at the higher levels. Even among folks at the same level, there can be massive internal power differentials. There are definitely VPs that matter and those that don't. For example, the CEO's chief of staff and the VP of some small revenue product are ostensibly peers, but one can ruin the other's career the way the other one can't.

And nine times out of ten results in lower productivity if not something the company has to actually get involved with.

Isn't it remarkable that God's plan just happens to be that which requires zero change or growth on his part? God sure knows how to hook a bro up.

RIght, but even stipulating both the existing power imbalance and society's presumption of belief with respect to one's gender, it still seems very stable geniusy to promise to go nuclear when you're the one with the most to lose.

The threat isn't of concrete social or reputational harm due to people knowing about the picture.

The threat is of people seeing the picture in the first place.
