These two things are unrelated and independent. We could totally have both.

No rationalization! Only more sorrow!

My rationalized wishing is that the Trumpistration could manage to be so feckless in the face of opposition that they fail to expand the powers of the presidency at all. That wouldn't suck, I suppose. (The Blues won't do anything so crazy as actually reduce the powers of the executive, natch, but halting the damage isn't nothing.)

So, does anybody want to change their vote?

Personally, I am staying with "Will not be impeached".

Even if Team Blue absolutely crushes Team Red in the mid-terms, I figure that Trump will be too useful as a boogeyman for Team Blue to force him out before the 2020 presidential.

I don't think he will be impeached before the 2018 election unless large majorities in the House and Senate are both at the stage of "Oh fuck no this guy has to be bounced and bounced now." So if he is impeached he will be removed.

After 2018 it is possible that the Blues will have enough votes to impeach but not to remove, and their base will absolutely insist that they try anyway. Like 1998-1999 with Clinton. I think that is almost the worst scenario (aside from an assassination attempt) because they will be weakened by it.

There's not a wisp of impeachability on the table yet. But there's enough original sin in JR's email to ordain a special prosecutor. And once you set a SP loose they keep digging till they draw blood. We'll have to wait and see how the second act plays out. So far this movie is the best Tom Clancy adaptation yet. I'm making more popcorn.

I agree that the current evidence is insufficient to justify an impeachment. However, the current evidence also makes no sense if there is nothing else there. So there almost certainly is much more there, and once Mueller uncovers it I think that it is very likely that impeachment will be justified.

I think that most of the Congressional Republicans would privately prefer to see Trump gone and the Russia affair closed and Pence in charge. The only question will be whether they can vote for that without losing primary elections.

If they weren't armed you could make an argument that it wasn't an actual raid, but showing up pre-dawn and executing a search warrant against a guy who by all accounts has been cooperating with subpoenas is still pretty heavy handed.

Are you of the opinion that there are no legitimate reasons for surprise executions of search warrants?

I don't agree with no-knock raids being used for a whole host of reasons (most egregiously, for the war on drugs), but that doesn't mean I believe they should never be used, only in extremely rare circumstances. For me, trying to stop a cabal who is attempting to hijack the country for the benefit of a belligerent foreign power is one of those circumstances...
