Meanwhile, a Waymo vehicle gets into an accident... when another car crosses into oncoming traffic and hits it.
I like how a driver crosses over the medium and hits an oncoming Waymo van and the headline is "Self-driving car crash in Arizona".
A Waymo van which wasn't even in automatic mode. But the news is always looking for man bites dog, so...

So the Uber AV fatality: The vehicle kinda waffled about what the object in the road was, but had picked it up at least 6 seconds before impact. But by the time it decided it was a bike and would be in the AV's path, it was down to 1.5 seconds from impact, at which point it was an emergency braking issue, an aspect that the Uber system left to the human behind the wheel by design, to "reduce the potential for erratic vehicle behavior". Of course, the vehicles didn't really have a way of notifying the human that they needed to emergency brake RIGHT NOW...

This is really a bad look for Uber overall. Yeah, it's a messup by the AV, but the fact that they made a decision like that in their design is a huge problem.

Uber says it plans to spend money lobbying for congestion pricing in Seattle as part of a $10 million push for “sustainable mobility” policies in various cities.

The ride-hail app company and its rival, Lyft, have previously expressed support for the idea of tolling downtown streets in Seattle, where Mayor Jenny Durkan’s administration is working to develop a proposal. But Uber’s new commitment to actively press for congestion pricing in the city, shared with The Seattle Times last week, could be the biggest boost yet for an effort certain to encounter political roadblocks, including concerns about affordability.
...
“We are going to invest $10 million over the next three years,” Uber spokesman Nathan Hambley said in an interview, referring to an announcement by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi last month about the public-policy spending.

“Part of that is going to go toward lobbying for congestion pricing … It’s a politically difficult case to make, but we feel strongly it’s good public policy,” Hambley added, saying the campaign will include lobbying in Seattle.

Props to Dara Khosrowshahi for pulling out of the Saudi conference, despite the Saudis having invested $3.5 B in the company and holding a board seat.

Wow, it's ... the actual right signal to send? By Uber? About Saudis? I'm confused.

Their new CEO is a Persian immigrant to the US. My guess is the Saudis were probably big Travis fans.

interessant
We examine the effect of the introduction of ridehailing in U.S. cities on fatal traffic accidents. The arrival of ridehailing is associated with an increase of approximately 3% in the number of fatalities and fatal accidents, for both vehicle occupants and pedestrians. The effects persist when controlling for proxies for smartphone adoption patterns. Consistent with ridehailing increasing congestion and road usage, we find that introduction is associated with an increase in arterial vehicle miles traveled, excess gas consumption, and annual hours of delay in traffic. On the extensive margin, ridehailing’s arrival is also associated with an increase in new car registrations. These effects are higher in cities with prior higher use of public transportation and carpools, consistent with a substitution effect, and in larger cities. These effects persist over time. Back-of-the-envelope estimates of the annual cost in human lives range from $5.33B to $13.24B.
