It was July 7, 1837. But only in Maine.

I take back everything I've said about Hillary. Clearly she is superior to Trump and the country would be much better off with a very stable genius like her in charge.

A cursory reading gives me no idea what is going on in that exchange or what nicole is even referring to. However I am intrigued by the David French/Higher Good divide. Who is an exemplar of the latter?

I don't know what that is either. Sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on all the junior high gossip by not being on twitter.

French / Amash wing is pretty much the low tax, deregulation, free market GOP of the last 40-50 years.

Ahrami wing wants to be morality progressives, passing laws and regulations to steer people's lives to what they think is better: more religion, more "family", more responsibility to community.

Not 25 words, but that's what I think the division is.

ETA: I tried to write this summary with as little evidence of my contempt for the Ahrami / Higher Good wing as possible, but I thoroughly disagree with them.

David French is an old-school authoritarian theocon, Sohrab Ahmari is a new-school authoritarian theocon. They are weasels fighting over a burrow. 21

If you squint it looks like dylan matthews is drawing parallels between the right-weasel fight and a couple of people on the left having a similar fight. I stand by my characterization of this as middle school drama.

Dude, Matt Bruenig is Elizabeth Stoker Bruenig's husband. EBruenig is famous for converting to Catholicism, having babies, and being a socialist.

David French is one of the guys who launched FIRE. I have a hard time calling him an authoritarian theocon, even though he is a religious conservative.

I disagree with David French about a lot. But he at least clears the bar of being good on the things he's supposed to be good on. He's genuinely pretty good on freedom of speech and religion. That isn't enough for me to vote David French for President, but it does make him not an authoritarian theocon.

Does FIRE ever do anything in favor of students who aren't conservative and Christian? I keep going back to Ken White and others pointing out free speech situations on campus they never go near.

I know who David French is because Popehat is generally a fan of him.

Looking through their recent press releases, I found one defending an animal rights group and another about defending a pro-pot event. And other things aren't "liberal" but aren't about defending conservative groups; they have some stuff on Title IX, a bunch dealing with fraternities for some reason...

Now that I'm not mobile and looking at the actual twitter spat...it's too bad "OK, boomer." has gotten trite, because it seems perfect and apt, there.
