I mean the comment was less about Trump and more about Milken. You’d think he’d try to keep his nose clean while the pardon was in the works.

Ordinarily yes, but in a strictly pragmatic way, I can see why any current Trump crony feels he doesn't need to worry about such things. Norms, laws and values are for the little people, not the politically well-connected ones.

Including every man on this forum who has a problem with Trump, it would seem. Though I'm a tad uncertain about the cause-and-effect relationship -- is it "Expressing concern about Trump causes a penis to become a vagina," or is it "Only people with vaginas have problems with Trump in the first place?"

"And the winner is... a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all that about? We've got enough problems with South Korea, with trade. On top of that, they give them the best movie of the year. Was it good? I don't know. Let's get Gone With the Wind back, please? Sunset Boulevard. So many great movies."
So North Korea is cool, but South Korean movies shouldn't win Oscars.

Sorry but I refuse to believe the man who has to have Eric fast forward to the good parts of Bloodsport has ever actually sat through Gone With the Wind.

Figures Trump would mention a racist Confederate apologia as the type of "great" movies he wants to see. Ties in with the "greatness" he wants to bring back to America.

Semi-related anecdote: I have the GWTW book, but I keep it on a bookshelf in my office (which guests never see) rather than on one of the shelves in the living room because, if GWTW had been a true story, all of my immediate neighbors, and IIRC all but one houseguest I've had since moving here, could be direct descendants of the slaves mentioned therein. And a couple weeks ago I was looking through the DVD bin at the thrift store near-ish my house (the one where I'm enough of a "regular" that some of the staff actually recognize and talk to me), and they had a copy of the movie -- one of the fancy collector's editions -- very cheap, and although I wouldn't mind adding it to my movie collection I did not buy it, because I was not going to buy such a thing in a store where most of the employees recognize me and ALL of them are black. (As I said to Jeff: "It's like really gross porn -- if you're going to buy it, buy it from a store where they don't know you.")

That raises a perversely amusing idea. I don't know what Steven Miller's voice sounds like, but we could probably sell "Deluxe" editions of "Birth Of A Nation" (unfortunately, GWTW is still under copyright) with a "special Trump-approved commentary" track by someone imitating Miller's voice. And if you act now, you get a bonus copy of "Triumph Of The Will" with a commentary track that sounds remarkably like Donny. Market them at Trump rallies; they'd probably sell like hotcakes.

The "... and other fraudsters" part is telling.
And super-ominous.

I cannot find it now, but sometime in the past couple weeks I saw an article about some new forms the Trump administration is putting out for immigrants; the gist of it was, every single window in that form HAS to be filled out; one empty box will get it tossed. But that would include -- these are the two examples I specifically recall from the article -- not filling in the middle-name box because you don't have one, and not filling in the apartment-number box because you live in a house. (Or in my current apartment complex, for that matter: there are no "apartment numbers." I won't give my real address, of course, but it's along the lines of "103 Elm Drive," NOT "100 Elm Drive, apartment 3." And my across-the-breezeway neighbor lives at 104 Elm Drive, and my next-door neighbor at 105.)

And I have zero difficulty picturing Trump and Co. refusing to distinguish between "fraudsters" and "honest mistakes." Technically speaking, I'm pretty sure I had "fraudulent" government documents during my earliest adult years -- in the specific sense that my full adult height topped out at 5'2", but there was awhile I erroneously thought it was 5'3" (because I was an inch taller than my mother and I thought she was 5'2", or something like that). So IIRC at least one driver's license I had back in the day, and possibly even the last military dependent's ID card I had before aging out of the system, had false information: one extra inch added to my height. Obviously an honest mistake on my part -- even if I wanted to commit nefarious acts of some sort, that extra inch on my ID card would not have helped me at all -- but I can definitely picture Trumpsters using something as minor as that as an excuse to deport or denaturalize people. JFC.

No reasonable person should want a recession (although as it happens I did sell off quite a bit of stock the first day the market started to dive), but if we're going to have one, I have to say it couldn't happen at a better time than the last year of Trump's first and hopefully last term.

Meanwhile, I'm all but certain "a massive stimulus" to the economy is already being considered, though I'll be damned if I know what the Fed can really do at this point. Besides, isn't government stimulus supposed to increase demand? Except for the airline and tourist industries, I don't see demand as the likely problem here.

Yes, yes it will.

As P.J. O'Rourke said in defense of his voting for Clinton, she'd be bad but it would be ordinary bad. Biden, if elected, will be ordinary bad. I'd be happy with that for a while.

And he's old enough that there's about 1/8 chance that he runs for a second term so we get to revisit the whole shebang in 2024.

Considering the ages of Trump, Biden and Sanders, there is a decent chance that the 2020 election will be a 'Get 2 presidents for the price of 1 election.'

I agree that there probably wouldn't be that much of a difference on the whole, but if the GOP is ever going to get a little less dumb having Trump lose the election would be ideal. Getting kicked out of office by the country should lessen his influence in a way serving another term won't. He needs to be repudiated.
