CNN has reported that Trump's approval rating is up. What the fuck, people?
Statistical noise, I'd guess.
Yeah. It has been hovering around 40% =/- 3% for a year now. Call me when it breaks below 35% for three consecutive weeks.

It's quiet as fuck on the news front today in regards to anything Trump. This worries me. I don't know why but it does.

Maybe his staff has to physically remove his phone, and hide it. IIRC, Huckabee-Sanders recently said something about how Trump was "too busy" to respond to something-or-other; in order for that claim to have even a snowball's chance, Trump HAS to stay the fuck off Twitter in the meantime.

He's actually tweeted a lot today, but most of it has been (by his low standards) relatively sane.

Nominating an Admiral to run the VA? Like, a guy with actual leadership experience in the public sector?

I just assumed he'd nominate Dr. Oz.

Yeah, and CNN says Trump liked how the guy performed on TV.

And it's partially based on information referred by Mueller, meaning there's an investigation that's not Russia-related going on, otherwise Mueller would have done it himself.

Ken White has an op-ed today in the NYT that breaks it down pretty well.

This seems like a legit big deal.

I am going to say "Oh, no!" Not because I like Trump, but because, if this brings him down, it will only feed the aggrieved victim narrative of his supporters. They will see their 'Great Man' destroyed by something most of them see as penny-ante shit. (To a certain extent, I agree: Paying off a prostitute, no matter the source of the funds, does not seem substantially different than lying about getting a blowjob from an intern in the Oval Office.)

His supporters will see this as part of the 'liberal conspiracy' against them, not as evidence that Trump is a lying, cheating jerk.

My personal preference is to see Trump brought down in a 538 - 0* electoral college landslide in 2020, although I concede I am worried about the damage he might do between now and January 20, 2021.

*(OK. Not likely. But something around 420 - 108 is possible.)

This is undoubtedly a big deal for the lawyer, but it means nothing for Trump. If he gets called to testify (he won't), then all he has to do is avoid perjury. His supporters don't give a tin shit if he banged a porn star. If anything it adds alpha-male appeal. Even if he does commit perjury, he's untouchable, as any charges would depend on impeachment, which would, in turn, depend on the House and Senate. In the House, especially, Trump could beat a toddler to death on live television while singing hymns to Satan and sucking off Putin (quite a trick), and nothing would happen. It's a bad day for one guy's law license. Other than that, it's meaningless.

I mean, impeachment is inherent political, so you're right that it doesn't matter if he committed a couple of technical violations.

But the immovability of Trump's support is wildly overstated. Firing Comey lead to like a four-point sustained drop in his approval rating. Sufficiently clear evidence of a sufficiently clear crime will swing a lot more people.

(You're right that his hard-core supporters will probably not abandon him. Nixon had a 25% approval rating when he left office. But you don't need to win them over; you just need to win over the squishier supporters. When Nixon had a 25% approval rating, he left office).

These are uncharted waters, but if a president becomes the subject or target of a grand jury investigation and chooses not to testify while in office, especially if he ends up being an unindicted co-conspirator in a prosecution that results in convictions, I think there is a high probability that any statutes of limitation would be put on hold until he left office at which time he would be subject to prosecution like anyone else.
