I am equally -- perhaps more -- concerned about ... not "what they'll do to stay in power," but "what they want to do with the power they get." Look at how many things they've already done for which, as has been said, "the cruelty is the point": separating parents from children before putting everyone in overcrowded concrete-floored cages does fuck-all to keep them in power; it's the sort of thing they want power to do. So what would the GOP do if they were further emboldened by successfully (at least in the short run) pulling off a flagrant theft to keep Trump in power?

I know we argued a lot with Taktix® whether Trump was a Russian agent or not, but this business of impugning the election process makes me reconsider my position.

No matter what the outcome here - Trump loses clearly and leaves while claiming fraud on the way out, Trump tries getting the states to override the popular vote (winning or losing), Trump ekes out an electoral college vote without shenanigans* - Trump will have succeeded in making the US election process less legitimate in the minds of his supporters and others. He will also make foreign powers less respectful of US democracy and grant a measure of legitimacy to people like Putin, Lukashenko, and Erdogan. That is certainly serving Putin's purposes and damaging the United States.

*Note I have not listed 'Trump accepting defeat and leaving office gracefully' and 'Trump winning the popular vote'. I consider both of these as extremely unlikely.

Honestly, I think they just want a lot of petty larceny and expensive contractors. But if they overturn an election they will need a whole lot more contractors than they realize. Quelling uprisings isn't cheap.

If they want to keep things going, and keep those contracts rolling in, they’ll need to keep the base amped up. And his base loves cruelty for cruelty’s sake. And barely concealed bigotry. The next four years are going to suuuuuck.

While I don't think they'll win - even with the dirty tricks - it is possible. And I am not entirely sure the republic would survive a second term.

I actually think this Ginsberg business is ultimately going to be more damaging than the election results. I think it's going to be too solid a win to contest successfully. But, they're going to push through a replacement on the court, and then actively resist any attempt to reform the court to reduce the partisan fervor. The pendulum is going to swing back, and it'll seriously damage the legitimacy of the whole system.

I agree, and I also think that Biden and Harris will initially resist calls to play retaliatory hardball. Which is how you get Sen. AOC and a wave of primary challenges in 2022.

If Blue centrists don't resist Red hardball then someone else will.

True its a dope flag good to look at and even the yellow is nice. Color harmony is not guaranteed when it comes to insignias in general and national insignias in particular.

I feel like now though that flag is very "fucks with their shirt on".

Trying to figure out whether this post from earlier in the thread aged "badly" or "all too well."

After Bush v. Gore, a lot of people took comfort in the thought that Bush II would likely be another innocuous one-term president, nothing too good but nothing too bad either, and that might've been how his administration played out ... if not for 9/11.

If the next four years have nothing particularly important happen, that's okay. But if a President Trump and his C-list sycophants have to handle an actual national emergency ... yikes.

My strategy. Except I had to work late so I'm not just conscious I'm still sober, so I've got Heretic Pride cranked up enough that I can't hear the sound of those two assholes (or that dipshit and that fucking batshit monster) coming from the other room.

Like any format wouldn't be a debacle.

Mind, I still don't buy the point of a debate.

Whatever is going on (and I don’t know, beccause I refuse to participate, and am instead enjoying a Parks and Rec Marathon) it’s not a debate. It’s 1.5 hours of two men puking focused grouped slogans at each other.

I try to be non-judgemental, but if you’re able to attain an erection after that....I recommend therapy. Or an exorcism.
