Gee, I wonder why people keep thinking male feminists are white knighting as a sexual strategy?

Publicly avowed morals contradicted by personal behavior.

News at..............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Frankly I think I don't think there's much point in focusing on the feminism aspect of this. But as a general thing, public shows of superior morality do pretty much mean zilcho about a person's actual ethics and people should be encouraged to bear that very much in mind.

Who is less in love with his wife: a male feminist who secretly treats her like shit or a fundamentalist pastor who has a lot to say about gays?

To be honest, at the risk of reeking of apologism for bad behavior, I think people and especially men should be a little circumspect about pointing too strong a finger at cheaters who face a lot greater temptation than most of us (unfortunately) will ever know.

There's that versus continuing to be a scold for feminism while doing it. Smacks of Larry Craig syndrome.

He's supposed to stop the public shows of morality once his private morality falters.

Haha. Right.

But sure, there's overlaps with the likes of Larry Craig, my point a few posts ago (in league with thoreau and Gawd and Matthew?).

The cheating part is less of an issue than the fact that he was apparently sleeping with women he met through work, where he was in a position of power and they were seeking his favor for advancement.

Whether or not individuals here are bothered by that, I was under the impression that many strains of feminism considered that a big no-no.

FWIW, the wife specifically calls him anti-feminist for cheating on him, i.e., taking her away her "right to make choices for my life and my body based on the truth". I don't think she says a word about his position of power over the women he cheated with, she just complains about his lies and affairs and their effect on her. Whether that's anyone else's reason for calling him anti-feminist is another matter.

Also using his feminism to gaslight his wife is pretty anti feminist.

That and blaming the patriarchy for his dick when he made excuses in his confession to her.

It's a big pile of "Really?" News flash: someone can believe something, champion it, and still be a shit in other ways. They can even make up horseshit excuses for their behavior based on ideology they believe in. People just don't like to think of assholes as being in their ideological club, so they try to cast them out as frauds. Peele who don't like Whedon have been trying to brand him a fake feminist for years.

And then, well, the dynamics of fandom.

I think being a 'fake feminist' is when people spend a LOT of time criticizing microagressions and pushing unrealistic standards, it's obvious that nobody will live up to them. 'Fake' implies that they are signaling harder than is reasonable, and it smells of desperation and falsity.

Meanwhile I'll watch a Roman Polanski or Klaus Kinski movie.

From the AV Club: Joss Whedon was never a feminist
Whedon manipulated the meaning of a word—calling himself a feminist without really understanding what feminism was—and he manipulated his wife. (Whedon has responded to Cole’s accusations with a statement: “While this account includes inaccuracies and misrepresentations which can be harmful to their family, Joss is not commenting, out of concern for his children and out of respect for his ex-wife.”) The problem of manipulative men is well known to women, and that’s why it’s so easy to believe Cole. If you’ve been in an emotionally abusive relationship or otherwise been manipulated by a man you trust, Cole’s letter will sound real fucking familiar. It’s hard to realize you’re being manipulated by somebody you trust—you trust them, that’s kind of the point—and the moment of realization is simultaneously empowering and depleting. You finally see the truth, and the truth punches you in the nose.
“Beautiful, needy, aggressive young women” are the words of a predator, not a feminist. “It felt like I had a disease, like something from a Greek myth” is just a more poetic way of saying “I couldn’t keep it in my pants.” “The world” isn’t yours for the taking. None of these are words you say if you believe that women are equal, and that we have the right to bodily autonomy, and that we are not things for you to consume and play with. (Hello, Dollhouse.) Feminism isn’t a brand, and it’s not something you can wield to deflect criticism.

Apparently the name "Whedon" is English, so he definitely isn't a True Scotsman.
