It wasn't until I was watching Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Fred Armisen last night that I realized that Portlandia Carrie Brownstein is also Sleater-Kinney Carrie Brownstein.

Except I'd probably rather eat peanuts and raisins than most other dried fruit, cost aside. The problem with peanuts, insofar as there is one, is that most on the market are mediocre at best. The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg sells excellent lightly-salted roasted jumbo peanuts and we usually keep a can in the freezer so they won't go stale before consumed. Good stuff.

I'm just sayin, the price you pay for mixed nuts is largely a matter of how much of the mix is peanuts. And if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.

I prefer raisins to any other dried fruit. Especially dried apricots.

The first is clearly true, but it's also true that the peanuts used in such mixes are so-so at best. I've been on smoked almonds kicks and cashew kicks and pistachio kicks from time to time, but good peanuts (which we all already know are not, technically, nuts) are a staple. They're cheap protein, "heart healthy" and tasty. And those Peanut Shop peanuts are the best goobers a reasonable sum of money can buy and are available at better grocery stores coast-to-coast. (But I still order them direct.)

If you've ever had Fig Newtons, you've had figs.
You can probably find dried figs in your mega mart if you look. They're worth picking up.
Fresh figs are divine but hard to come by.
