Our Friends, The House of Saud

Post by Mo » 08 Aug 2018, 18:06

Since bad Twitter memes and expelling the ambassador didn’t work, KSA has found even more aggressive, yet futile actions.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a huge overreaction by the Saudis to anyone else? Like "You can't tell me what to do! I bet you're not even my REAL mom!" teen tantrum level overreaction to "Your room is a mess." I'm guessing there's some sort of cultural aspect to it, but I certainly can't speak to that. It just seems like a lot of yelling about a fairly standard criticism of Saudi Arabia.

This is MBS's lack of maturity and maybe thinking the Trump style works 1) on the world stage 2) when you're not in possession of the most powerful military in world history.

The thinking here is that they figure Canada is small enough that they think we will fold & others will thus be intimidated.

Why would Canada fold? AFAIK Canada is self sufficient oil-wise and doesn’t sell much to KSA. Canada can pretty safely tell MBS to pound sand.

I wonder why State is silent.

What really gets my goat is the Instapundit wing of the Trumpaloo nation used to be all Saudi Delenda Est 15 years ago, and now, nihilo.

Presumably taking cues (if not direct orders) from POTUS? The only world leaders Trump likes and supports are those who compliment him profusely -- Putin and Duterte make the cut, but I don't recall Justin Trudeau praising Trump's brilliance and wonderfulness.

Eh, after the anti-war protestors STFU the moment Obama got into office, it doesn't surprise me.

Whoa, apparently emojis are like Amazon links for me on this forum -- I cannot see them in regular posts. (Although now that I have hit the "quote" button and know what to look for, I do indeed see the words "emoji848" inside a pair of brackets.) Huh.

I would love to see Jeffrey Goldberg follow up on his, “MBS is a great liberal reformer” article. Bonus points if he says that MBS is trying to show the barbarity of execution by bringing back crucifixions.

No chance Canada will fold; Freedland has backing from most of Canada, including Conservative. Even so, it's a warning shot to others who might take a swipe as the KSA.

Also Trump hates human rights. The cops need to bash heads, and the low-energy ACLU can stop whining about immigrants and criminals and drug dealers and little old ladies who don't want to sell their homes to piece of shit casino developers.

It's why Trump likes Putin and Duterte and MBS and everyone else. It's the basic populist/fascist instinct of fuck liberalism fuck democracy fuck everything else we've got shit to do get out of our way. Also white people and 'the good ones' of black people and asians and latinos and the good latinos don't think of themselves as latinos anyway.

So why the fuck should State whine about dissidents in KSA?

Look at this KSA knob gobbling. Oh noes, Canada tweeted at MBS in Arabic and therefore shamed him.

But Mo, he's trying to reform things! Except for, you know, not throwing people in jail when they make him look bad. But that's ok, because other stuff is important!

This situation must be understood in the context of Saudi and Islamic culture. Any Arab leader, particularly a young one who has recently assumed power in a traditional and mostly tribal society, has to carefully maintain his and his country’s stature and prestige, what classical Muslim scholars called hayba. This refers to the awe and respect that a ruler and his state must command in order to maintain order and stability without having to resort to excessive coercion, and without which there is no basis for legitimate rule.
I love how he thinks this is somehow unique to Arab and/or Islamic culture, and not something Aristotle, Plato and Machiavelli, among others, prattled on about incessantly.

eta -
The crown prince’s stated goal is social, economic, and cultural and religious transformation of his kingdom — not political reform.
Well, then how do you say in Arabic "Sic Semper Tyrannis, Motherfucker"?
And Saudi leaders have surely not forgotten what happened to the shah of Iran when he was accused of implementing an America agenda: Clerics used the charge to inflame the people against him and he was deposed in a revolution.
oh. no. please. not that.
