I haven't crunched the numbers to see the potential downside is, but I have long wanted to try out the perpetual money machine that is shorting the leveraged short ETF and sufficient leveraged long ETFs to cover.

I would imagine its like the perpetual money machine CDO/CDS play was - when it actually comes crunch time, certain players won't be able to pay out - or will simply refuse to - and the machine comes crashing to a halt.

They're just daring Powell to raise interest rates a full percentage point, just for shits and giggles.

People play roulette, complain when the ball falls in red instead of black. (Read the section on XIV)
When you put it like that, yes it sounds incredibly stupid, and we clearly didn't understand the risks. The context is that XIV was just printing money. Why would you think you could lose everything if you had just almost tripled your money in a year?

We can't find people to hire at our low wages (yet unemployment keeps going down).

As a former IBM M&A guy, that Red Hat acquisition is something. Definitely tells me we're getting pretty close to the top.

I think Mo means that corporate acquisition binges, especially questionable ones, are a common leading indicator of market peaks. [AOL/Time Warner, anyone?]

As someone who knows their valuation hurdles, there is no chance that Red Hat can hit any of them in any reasonable sense at that valuation. That indicates to me that they’re overspending because the market has gotten irrational.

Especially if they're sincere about maintaining RH's open-source nature. IBM is either lying, or they're crazy.

I got Mo's point, but I didn't get Jason's cryptic response. I think Warren was similarly confused.

They almost certainly are as IBM is a massive open source shop as well. In reality, they're desperate as they're in 4th place in the cloud game, at best.
