The pricing where I live is about $100 from Cox for internet + cable and about $120 for just internet.
So they're paying you to get cable?
Yes, because networks pay for access based on subscribers. So Comcast is selling the possibility of you seeing those networks' ads.

Although Halloween is the observance that I hate most, I decided I should have a small supply of Halloween treats on hand in case some kids ignore the fact my house is dark and somehow make it past the deadfall traps to shout "Liquor Sweet" or some such garbage at my door. I stopped by the store to see if I could pick up some junk food 'treats' to throw at hand out. Preferably something saturated with sugar (If the kid's parents are going to let them pester me, I'll give the kids a sugar buzz for their parents to enjoy.)

Unbelievably, there were no Halloween treats on sale. Nada. I checked three stores. Instead, there were Advent Calendars, Candy Canes and Chocolate Santas.*

WTF!!

*I suppose I could have given out Chocolate Santas with their heads bitten off, but that would probably bring a visit from Child Protection Services.

It brings two of the things I hate most. Uninvited doorbell ringing and the laughter of children.

I wanna like it, but I just... ugh. Doesn't help that I had to go to the store for a missing ingredient right in the middle, so a bunch of people saw my shame at the fiction of the porch light. But OTOH the King Soopers was super empty - like 11PM empty, but without all the stock boys piling palates of shit in the aisles.

That's cute you guys but seriously, "Kum N Go" is the only one of those that comes close to Piggly Wiggly. It edges King Soopers, but just barely. Seriously, Soopers. Just so we're clear that's a descriptor, not a surname.

This is a good article about how scammy Amazon has become. It’s odd, when you compare Google, Amazon and FB now to where they were a half decade ago, the products are worse at their core competencies, but they’re more profitable.

I think we are all of us struggling to understand the world of platforms this powerful. They have huge embedded value that grows natively with user base and at a certain size I think you are no longer trying to grow that base with optimal user experience- you are trying to monetize that embedded value you cultivated at a loss.

I can’t imagine Amazon letting frauds and the like slide is long term maximizing. The thing that I find odd is Amazon sending C&Ds to the review verifier sites. Without those sites, I would actually buy less from amazon than I do. FB is turning into a ghetto for olds, and without their kids posting pictures of their grandchildren, they’ll leave too. Google is the only one that has a sufficiently large product most that they can get despite the SEO gaming.

I sometimes think you too often confuse “successful company chooses a strategy” with “successful company chooses a long term successful strategy”. In the physical world I could point you to GE Finance.

I didn’t say it would be successful. I said there’s a point in platforms where site optimization is not the primary business. Especially - and I think this is important, if you ran that long at high capital cost with no profit. You have created network effects. Like the reviews base for amazon. At a certain point you will try to monetize. There are good approaches and bad approaches. I have no particular take on amazon right now. I haven’t had bad experiences but I know many who have. The app with Apple Pay is the easiest shopping experience I have.

Yeah, I've run across stuff on Amazon that I'd classify as broken. But it's still the best consumer experience humanity has ever known. There's not even a close second.
I'm actually impressed that they can keep all those balls in the air - all that content, features, logistics, all that money changing hands, and as far as we know, they still haven't allowed themselves to fix a POTUS election.

The Amazon shopping experience isn’t the best online shopping experience ever as it is worse than the Amazon shopping experience 4 years ago. Now you have to scroll through a screen full of ads to find what you’re looking for. Their logistics remain legit amazing though.
