Big difference between Reagan and W. is that the recession waited 2 years after Reagan got out of office, so he could pin it on HW Bush. W had the recession happen his last year, so he got blamed for it.

I mean Reagan just had a bigger impact in a lot of ways. Inflation, real gdp growth, unemployment, the soviets, defense deficit spending ... it totally makes sense Reagan has an big imprint, like him or not.

I really liked Thatcher. She was the better educated version of Reagan. I've oft wished she was ours.

Oh it’s totally this here too. It’s other things but it’s mostly the end of the progressive movement and powerful labor unions. It was really foot shooting and stagflation but Reagan/thatcher are the faces. 8% was starting to look like structural unemployment and AD levers didn’t work because of rigidity in regulation and labor markets. Only the misty eyed want to return to the great times of 1975.

The average American response to Margaret Thatcher would be "who the fuck is Margaret Thatcher?"
"The girl in 'Tom Sawyer'?"
I almost went with that, but realistically, Tom Sawyer would prompt a depressing number of people to say "you mean the song by the drummer they name checked in Family Guy?"
I actually did think DAR meant the song and not the book.

If it makes Ellie feel any better, I in turn had to google the song(s). Virtually all Rush references are lost on me; litterally all obscure 90s electropunk band references are lost on me.

OFFS on all sides.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-plac ... oes-viral/

It was complete bullshit that she called the cops on the guy filming her. It is also bullshit that her employer has put her on administrative leave and that she has surrendered her dog. She owes the dude an apology and she owes herself some reflection. That's it.

That said, I would love to hear what the"Believe all women" crowd thinks about this.

I dunno, I think it got more serious than just an apology when she called the cops, given the entirely possible known consequence of what could happen with her calling the police, saying that she's being attacked by an "african-american man", fake crying, and even trying to use the sound of the struggling dog to make it sound like there is a scuffle. It was an apology when she started yelling at him for asking her to leash her dog where it was required. And I don't know how serious "administrative leave" at that company is. I could imagine that it's the right response for now, they publicly put her on ice, talk to her about the incident, get her to reflect on it (cause I really doubt she'd do any meaningful reflection on her own, at least enough to change her behavior next time it happens) and then reinstate her.

It's a shitty situation. And it was entirely caused by her. I'd rather an outcome like this where someone doesn't end up in the hospital or morgue than a situation where someone was hurt by the cops based on a completely falsified report.

It is shitty. And of course I am glad that nobody wound up in the morgue. But I also don't like the idea that pretty much every day social media serves up a public spectacle that places somebody's employability in jeopardy. Especially since she's seemed contrite in subsequent reporting. [Retracted because this is very hard to gauge accurately.]

For sanity's sake, I hope that her company's internal investigation translates to "Wait until social media is distracted by a new spectacle and then call her into the boss's office for some chewing-out, followed by quiet reinstatement."
