Police Shutdown Calgary Airport After Orchestra Instrument Mistaken For A Gun
According to police, someone called the police to report a possible active shooter in the airport at approximately 1:45 p.m, just before the orchestra was about to perform.

After an investigation, the Calgary Police reported that a band was playing at the airport, and there was no threat.

A video posted to Twitter by user Mike Nishizaki showed the panic that followed.

Three officers are seen in the video running down a corridor shouting at travellers, “back, back, back, now!”

The video then shows the camera back running down the hallway. A person is heard on the video saying “I think there’s a shooter.”
Having heard some "Youth Orchestras", I think the threat was real.

OFFS: Church and State Edition

I like Leonard French. (although I wish he would be a little more concise). First, it's incredible that the County thought they could get away with this. Second, it is incredible that the District Court dismissed the case. At least the appeal court slapped their wrists:

So there was a measles outbreak in NYC, the worst in decades. But something tells me these guys aren’t new age hippies that shop at Whole Foods.

'Black Panther' makes Oscar history with best picture nod

I am trying to decide whether
A) the films in 2018 were just so bad that Black Panther got in by being 'Least Awful' ,
B) the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is that stupid,
C) Both

I am leaning towards 'C'.

Black Panther has to win, for many reasons, and not all of them about racial politics. They had at one point seriously considered having a "best popular movie" category. Clearly there is an internal constituency that wants to give Oscars to action blockbusters. This is their chance to do that while also winning points on racial politics.

They expanded the number of best picture nominees so that they could nominate movies like Black Panther. Mad Max was also nominated, for pretty much the same reason; they need a popular, middlebrow high performer.

Black Panther is still better than Crash or Shakespeare in Love.

I feel so silly looking for actual plot or character development in a movie nominated for best picture.

Mad Max deserved consideration for technical stuff for sure. Not best pic by any means, but it was an amazing looking movie.

And not the ones for technical achievement, either. Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay. So, the next time Gwyneth Paltrow tried to sell your wife jade vagina eggs, you'll know who to blame.

Ugh, Shakespeare in Love was/is a very pretty movie IMO (I actually spent a whopping 50 cents to buy the DVD at a library sale a couple months ago), but the glaring anachronisms in what was supposedly a prestige period piece kept yanking me out of the story and into paroxysms of Comic Book Guy-style- nerd rage.

EDIT: fixed egregious typos

It's Best Picture for the year, not Amazing Timeless Movie of the year. (This is true of a lot of awards.)

I suspect Black Panther won't win, but as people have said, the nod is to counter the whole "the Academy only votes for arty crap for Best Picture anymore" sentiment. (Though I still thought Birdman was pretty great.)

Saving Private Ryan, American History X and Bulworth were better films in 98.

That’s right, Bulworth.

Bulworth was aging white Boomer wannabe-edgy inanity. American History X got Norton a Best Actor nomination, but it wasn't even up for Best Picture.

Saving Private Ryan, I'd definitely say was more deserving than Shakespeare in Love.

Just because something wasn’t up for Best Picture doesn’t mean it wasn’t a worthy film. Groundhog Day didn’t get a nomination, but it was better than The Fugitive. Nothing is beating Schindler’s List that year though.

I feel weird having to point this out, but the Oscars are not a relevant indicator of the quality of a film or contribution thereto. The Oscars are prom that only the popular kids are invited to.

I maintain the only reason Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan was because they also put up The Thin Red Line, and they cannibalized each other's votes. Now that I think about it, that's probably also true for Crash, with Brokeback and Capote being the cannibalized instead.
