This is yet another reason why I squint very warily at anyone gushing about Yudkowsky, even if it's just for his Harry Potter fanfic.

This was actually my first thought. It’s the kind of thing that would rally people to the candidates in question. It’s possible that the authors have a very specific beef with one of the targets, but it deffo pings my bullshit meter.

After hearing some of the crazypants stuff some of my coworkers deal with in their local tri-state suburbs, it did not ping my b.s. meter at all. For example, this is less crazypants, but more cartoonish, a coworker told me that the English sign for local fireworks show gave the park address and the Spanish ones directed people to go to Norwalk. A local resident was bilingual and, rightly, freaked the fuck out about it.

Hahahaha. That is funny.

Norwalk even has people playing cricket on the school ballfields so it's extremely apropos.

Funny. Actually, the chick I went to HS with and have reconnected with here is from there (BMHS has a magnet program she went to) and told me they had a whole Thing in Wilton last year because at some (football?) game the Wilton kids started chanting "build the wall" (I don't remember who they were playing) and she got into some whole thing on Facebook/with her family about confronting racism in their community etc.

Complaining about Spanish in public spaces is instantly believable, compared to worrying about cricket. But that's not my world, I'll take your word that it's plausible.

Wait, you think the complaint was about the Spanish? The complaint was that the English sign told people where the town fireworks were and the Spanish sign told people where the fireworks were, in another town.

I somehow got a fundraising letter from the American Legislative Exchange Council. The opening lines:
ALEC wrote:The results of the 2016 election made one thing clear: Americans support limited government and free markets.
(emphasis in original)

If that's their take-away from the election of a crony capitalist who campaigned on a protectionist platform, OK, whatevz.

hahaha WHAT
Facebook is asking users to send the company naked photos and videos of themselves so that it can block the images if they are later uploaded as revenge porn.

A trial of the feature in Australia asks people worried that their intimate pictures might be posted by an ex partner to provide the images to Facebook, so that it knows to prevent them being uploaded in future. The trial is due to spread to the UK, US and Canada.

Facebook's software would create a "hash" - a digital fingerprint of the photo - so it can be recognised the next time it is uploaded and automatically blocked. It hopes that pre-emptive action will prove better than deleting images only after they are reported, by which time the damage may have been done.
...
Julie Inman Grant, Australia's e-Safety commissioner, said Facebook would not be permanently storing the images, but only the hashes, which are capable of blocking further attempts to upload the pictures but can not be decoded to produce the images.

This makes sense, but I wouldn't trust Facebook with that shit. Give me an open source hashing tool and let me send the hash instead.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but how little do I have to photoshop the image to jack the hash on my new photoshopped image and get it past the filter? I'm thinking not a whole lot.

given the results I've seen on google image search, I'd say it is a whole lot.

The real problem is that FB isn't really the preferred revenge porn hosting site.

The point is that learning algorithms can recognize mildly altered images, but they can't recognize mildly altered _hashes_. Because that's the whole point of a hashing function.

Mo. And tr0g.

Mo said "Let me upload a hash instead of giving you the actual picture", and tr0g pointed out that very minor edits will screw up the hash, but maybe still let the original picture be recognizable.

Of course, you could do that with this route. It's just a bad idea.
