Probably all you need to do is crop a little.
A smart hashing system would create a tile of sub-hashes, so that a partial match of an image would still come back with a partial hit to at least flag the image for review or something.

Doesn't that kind of miss the point of hashing?

Or are you going to rehash every subrectangle of every image or something?

Like, the whole point of hashes is generally that you can't get partial information out like that.

Weird how this was discussed years ago, to very little notice. Now that it's A Thing, it gets attention. Apparently justice needs a bandwagon.

Kind of like how Sinead O'Connor called out the Pope for knowing that priests were raping kids and got obliterated for it, then 20 years later it turned out the SOB did know, and let the Vatican play three-card Padre.

This seems different. For one thing I didn't know she was accusing the pope of abetting child molesters till years later. I assumed it was over the Irish thing.

The Louis CK thing is because all the accusations were quiet and anonymous. This broke out because some women felt safe attaching their names to it.

Yes, the Irish child abuse thing. She spoke about it at the time.

The point is that learning algorithms can recognize mildly altered images, but they can't recognize mildly altered _hashes_. Because that's the whole point of a hashing function.
How is that the point? Who was talking about hashes?
Mo. And tr0g.

Mo said "Let me upload a hash instead of giving you the actual picture", and tr0g pointed out that very minor edits will screw up the hash, but maybe still let the original picture be recognizable.
And the original article.
Came up in a twitter thread, and I learned some things.

In particular, there's something called a perceptual hash that doesn't work like a normal hash; it's used to fingerprint multimedia files, and similar files generate similar hashes so you can't evade the detection with trivial alterations of the file.

But unlike normal hashes, these are vulnerable to the obvious attacks and gaming attempts---the ones that lead us to make normal hashes irregular. So you can't use them usefully if the hashing algorithm is made public. That's why they're hashing server-side rather than client-side.

Edit: the twitter thread, which is good, is here.
