Even a tie is aiming higher than we need. I say we put the North Carolina state legislature in charge of the Afghan war. They will be happy to build monuments celebrating a second-place finish.

Is Afghanistan a cricket place, though? I thought they liked this sport that involves riding around on horses and fighting over a goat's head.

It's apparently now the official policy of the United States Army that wars never fucking end.

I am 100% certain that sometime in 2020 (or even late 2019, depending on when they finish training) there will be US troops in Afghanistan who were born after 9/11.

That is fucking scary.

I endorse Kevin Drum's take on the alleged deal in Afghanistan. In short, there's no way to "win" anything, but Trump doesn't care, he'll declare victory, pull out, then blame the ensuing mess on Obama. But at least we'll be out of Afghanistan. Nice that the idiot finally made himself useful.

Yep. I agree. The Taliban will break the deal as soon as the last helicopter flies out, but at least that chapter of the Forever War will be over.

GTFOoA.

I know a guy who has been there as a contractor recently, and he believes that the US will never actually leave. The "regular" troops might leave, but beyond the utterly unsurprising presence of deniable CIA spooks, he believes that there will always be bases with special forces, contractors, and other people whose boots are not considered to be on the ground.

I disagree with this:
This will lead to hundreds of chin-stroking explainers and think pieces (“Did Obama Lose Afghanistan?” “Is the Taliban Really That Bad?” “Why Afghanistan Was Never Winnable,” etc.) and unanimous support from conservatives. Trump will get away with it in a way that no other president could.
If Trump loses in 2020, it will be in the list of sins why Trump isn't a True Conservative™ and why you should trust the Josh Hawleys and Tom Cottons and give them power despite spending 4 years tossing his salad.

Only Nixon Trump could go to China get out of Afghanistan.

That's probably right. We still had people in Vietnam till the very end, and, if it weren't for the fact that the institution of the Presidency was at its nadir after Watergate, we probably would have used air power and other off shore support to help the South Vietnamese push back the North's conventional advance.

Eta - see also, that we sort of left Iraq but not really and then was back in a heartbeat when Isis came rolling down the valley.

I am dismayed by the outrage over inviting the Taliban to Camp David.

Everyone knows how eager I am to criticize Trump, but I don't care if he sits down with the Taliban. Negotiating with enemies is how you end wars. I have no great confidence that he will negotiate successfully, but I am not offended by the notion of an American leader talking to the Taliban.

If talking to enemies is beyond the pale then wars will never end.
