Actually, I see an even easier way to end the war:

At this point most people in the military are Millennials or Generation Z, so just declare that All Forces Are Special. And then, by definition, there are no boots on the ground!

Since it was Donald Trump making the claim that these talks were scheduled but then cancelled, the first response should be to question whether they were ever really scheduled in the first place.

Right, but most critics skipped that part and said that the talks should never ever be scheduled. And on that point they are 100% wrong.

I think some of it is that, a few years back, Trump attacked Obama for trying to negotiate with the Taliban.

If they want to attack Trump for being a massive hypocrite and mentally unstable, well, hey, it's a day ending in y. Have at it.

If they want to seriously stake out the stance that we should never negotiate with the Taliban, I have some bad news for them: Pashtun tribal chiefs will outlast the US. And they will always be better than us when it comes to mountain warfare.

Specifically, he criticized Obama for talking with the Taliban while slashing the US military budget. And fast forward to 2019 ....

The criticisms I read were less the "negotiating with the Taliban" ones and more the "Trump (administration) secretly invited the Taliban to the US right before 9/11" ones.

For once, I agree with Elizabeth Warren:

(It's Vox, beware)

Headline:
The Democratic candidates’ debate answers on Afghanistan were terrible
Subhead:
If 2020 Democrats want to leave Afghanistan, they need to come up with a real plan.
At the Democratic presidential debate on Thursday, the 2020 presidential candidates argued over the nitty-gritty details of policy proposals on everything from health care to gun policy to immigration and criminal justice reform.

But when it came to what to do about the war in Afghanistan, the candidates were devoid of ideas about what to do beyond “get out, and get out fast.”

Indeed, it seems like they’re competing to one-up each other on how quickly they’ll pull US troops out of the country. When the campaign cycle started, nearly all of the candidates were pledging to remove troops by the end of their first term. Then, it changed to bringing them home by the end of their first year in office.

On Thursday night, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) moved the goalposts even closer: promising on the debate stage to pull troops out of Afghanistan immediately, even without a peace deal in place.

“What we’re doing right now in Afghanistan is not helping the safety and security of the United States, it is not helping the safety and security of the world, it is not helping the safety and security of Afghanistan,” Warren said. “We’re not going to bomb our way to a solution in Afghanistan.”

When pressed by the moderator on whether she’d listen to her top military leaders if they advised her not to pull troops out without a deal in place, Warren pushed back, saying that when she’d talked to US generals about it in the past, they were unable to define what “winning” in Afghanistan looks like. “No one can describe it,” she said. “And the reason no one can describe it is because the problems in Afghanistan are not problems that can be solved by a military.”
Declare Victory and BUG OUT.

That would be lovely if it were even marginally plausible. But we've already seen from two subsequent administrations that there is no political cost to forever war in Afghanistan, and Elizabeth Warren of all people is not going to spend political capital on foreign policy nor let the inevitable bloody collapse of a post-US Afghanistan distract from her many plans for how we live our lives.
