I don't find the phrase "best friend" childish, although I have found my circle of "best friends" has gotten larger as I get older.

Of course, anyone who would use those phrases in my direction would send me running in the other direction. :P

In your biography, they'll be called your 'best friend and confidante'. Don't fight it.

Maybe this is me. I don't find this as annoying* as the idea of a 45 year old person having a boy/girlfriend. However, the solutions all seem to have a "It's 1890, and you're my gay lover" problem.

At some point my "best friend(s)" just turned into my "oldest friends" when there was any need to describe them. Distance, family and work commitments make it impossible to spend as much time with old friends as we would both otherwise prefer, but I have a couple of friends going back to middle school and still have many friends from my UVA days (W&M not so much because I was far more of an introvert back then) that only distance keeps me from seeing regularly.

In a sense, the whole notion of a "best friend" is less important in most ways but more important in a few ways the older one gets. Or at least that has been my experience.

Even after all these years it surprises me how casually people use the word 'friend'.

I was going to suggest "particular friend" which is used in the Aubrey/Maturin series. However that does come off a bit gay the more I think it, or at the very least a little weird.

Dunno, I've never seen anything childish about the phrase "best friend". "Boyfriend" or "girlfriend" at my age, maybe, but the alternatives are scarce.

I think it just sounded weird in my head when I said it to my boss' boss that Mojito may be born on the same day as my best friend.

I know I dislike talking of Duane as "My mom's boyfriend", especially given how long they've been together and have lived together.
