1) Cops are involved = bad news
2) Chuck Schumer is involved = bad news
3) FCC is involved = bad news

I don't think there's any story you could cook up with those three entities that wouldn't involve unintended consequences at best, and outright nefarious intentions at worst.

Cell providers shutting down phones at police behest? What could possibly go wrong?

I mean, it's not like the cops would ever ask them to do it to a phone that hadn't been reported stolen, right?

Well, that would be an unintended consequence, I'd think...

Now, if he was intentionally shot... no, that would be nefarious (maybe?) intentions.

Really? Is cell phone theft such a big thing?
This smells more like Big Brother tracking to me. 5 years in the pen for messing with your phone's ID seems a bit excessive.

Also, Fuck Schumer, I hate that guy.

Additionally, Schumer said that he would introduce legislation that would make it a crime to change those unique identifiers—much like a car's VIN—on cell phones, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Somebody should make Schumer say that out loud, just to see if it brings a flicker of awareness to his dull brain.

Perhaps if someone competent who espoused different policies had followed either man directly, history would take a dimmer view of the two of them.

Or expanded to prevent cell phones from being sold secondhand by the original owner and put on someone else's account.

Plus, it's already impossible to reuse a stolen cell. The nature of the phone makes it impossible to use off-carrier, and the carriers that license the phones already keep listings of stolen UIDs. At the call center, every day someone would call in with a phone they bought off ebay, only to find Sprint had already locked it out of the system.

A bit of a threadjack on an old thread:

What if the singularity has already occurred? What if the botnets and AI have achieved a level of self-awareness that they are now capable of manipulating us through the information we see, watch and read? If they have analyzed which persons are 'influencers' and how to manipulate decision makers to produce the outcomes they seek?

They could already have us on a path to salvation/destruction without us being aware of it or able to prevent it.

Sleep tight.
