JIRA can interact with Slack. My last job had it where every bug that was entered into JIRA would appear in a certain Slack channel.
Good to know. We use HipChat now, and Slack spoiled me (except for s/mispel/misspell/, that's gold).

I've had to start using Skype for IM in my new job. I really miss Slack.

If I understand correctly, Wi-Fi Phone is just Skype without the video feed? Yes? Should I be able to make and receive calls from abroad using Wi-Fi?

Hard to believe the telecom companies would permit something that easy to avoid international call charges.

You can also just get a GSM phone and switch out the SIM card with a local burner service when abroad. I think only Verizon and Sprint use CDMA in the U.S. The rest of the world uses GSM.

CDMA is also used in places like China and India, but like the US, they also have GSM.

Using VLC media player to rip DVDs to an external hard drive for backup and portability: brilliant or moronic?

Any suggestions? Format to save in? Strategy? How long should it take per disc?

Is there anything in particular you're going to play them on? Like if you were trying to put them on a phone to watch on the go, then you'd be more worried about file size, and less worried about preserving max resolution. If you are ripping your discs to be the main thing you watch on your home theater, and you've got limitless storage (because you're going to keep buying 1 TB HDDs whenever you're running out of space), then you want to keep more bitrate and resolution, and you're not going to worry about file size.

It also matters what kind of device you're going to play them on. mkv containers are fairly well supported now, and that would be what I would go with, but MP4 is a lot more widely supported on older devices. h264 encoding is pretty universally supported as well, and AAC is more widely supported than FLAC for audio. I really don't know about preserving multi-track surround audio, you'd have to look into what your player can decode.

I wouldn't use VLC for anything, but would go with Handbrake, like dhex. You can also find plenty of articles like this one about settings. If you are watching your rips, you'll end up making changes, and then be all like "oh, I encoded that one wrong, but don't want to redo it" later. How much you worry about that is up to you.

Hypothetically, the rip is a backup for the DVD, so full resolution would be preferable, if feasible. I have a 5 TB external drive for backing up my 1 TB laptop drive, so purchasing another is reasonable.

Thanks for the link.

Any particular reason for the preference for Handbrake over VLC?

VLC defaulted to mp4/h264+something, so I left it at that for a test run. A rip of SuperTroopers has taken hours and doesn't seem to be finished yet. Admittedly, my laptop's DVD drive probably needs to be replaced.

I just don't like VLC as a player, so I don't use it for anything.

It's probably not the DVD drive. It doesn't do much in the process and really doesn't take long to read a whole DVD. It might be that there is some setting that VLC is using to make it be so slow. Unless your computer is on WinXP, it shouldn't take anywhere near as long as the actual movie to do an encode. On the other hand, if you use Handbrake, I think you also need another program to read the files off the DVD.

I mean my method is slow and shitty.

I rip an image to my hd
Then I go into handbrake and use my DVD default (mkv container) and make up a queue of each episode of each TV show.
Then I go run it and do something else.
With movies it's easier because you just rip and convert one file instead of 57 a la adventure time season five

I use DVD decrypter iirc for ripping the disc. Older version I think. Can check later.

MakeMKV is a decent tool, if you don't want to transcode.

Thanks. VLC crashed after a few hours. I'll try something else. I'll check out MakeMKV.

New Windows10 update, Creators update is finalizing. What fresh hell will this entail?

Why does Google Chrome mobile app and/or Android automatically put a notification bar to permit the user to simultaneously close all incognito tabs?

Why would anyone need that? Just crash the whole app.

Why permit such a button to jump around, specifically to move underneath my finger just as I'm trying to tap on a different notification bar, thereby closing every incognito tab I was planning to either read or bookmark for later?

Really, really stupid and annoying.
