I do think there's a lot to be learned from this, from finding out why people are willing to make such accusations, why they change their minds.

What keeps me from learning from this article is that Soave didn't perform the usual journalistic follow-through of asking the other named party if they wish to comment. Yes, there's a real possibility that she'd do something ugly to another person if she gets upset, but journalists don't spend all of their time writing articles about incidents involving nice, reasonable people who would never do anything crazy. (Especially if they're on the "Look at these people leveling questionable allegations without corroborating evidence!" beat.)

This incident is similar enough to plenty of other incidents, so the basic outline of what I read in the article seems entirely plausible. But these safeguards aren't supposed to be ignored just because everything fits with our pre-existing narratives. That's how incidents like UVA Jackie can happen.

OK maybe more headline writers than journolos but by the end of this story I hated every participant, from zuck to the parents to the kids to the chrome books and potted plants if there were any. The goose fucking is the only good part.

Cheshire's a pretty rich town; I'd bet any kid there whose family wants them to have their own computer can afford to buy one already. Odd that they wouldn't try rolling this out in a place where students likely CAN'T afford such things.

I made the mistake of reading the comments. (short version: capitalism is evil, school choice is evil, Christians are somehow to blame for this) Admittedly some of them were funny, like "Now I'm dying to google 'Roman sex with a goose'... but should probably wait until I'm home from work."

Some people like to juggle geese, indeed. I never realized 'juggle' was a euphemism.

Possibly. Could also be just the usual porny Roman pottery bits tho.

Why would anyone put Megyn Kelly on serious news when she just learned that blackface was racist this week? At least we can get a pretty face next to the definition of 'privilege'.

I suppose it would be very politically incorrect to laugh.

It is truly a rag now. Did you see my tweet about how their big harrowing Yemen famine story ended with a kicker that used “reign” for “rein” and mis-capitalized “Western”?

I kind of assume that they mean people see it that way 'in London' because that's what the drummer's quote implies. I'm curious what the racial makeup of the Left Bank scene is these days. I think the one Jazz place I went to in Paris had a mostly white band, but I'm not positive, because it was a long time ago and I was really tired after a death march through the Louvre that afternoon, and most other memories were driven out by the embarrassment at trying to ask for a table for two in French and ending it with 'por favor.'

I don't know what the word 'gaslighting' means and I wish people would stop using it. There are plenty of actual English words.

At some point gaslighting just came to mean “insisting you are right in an argument with a woman” tho.

This thread is visible to Google, so let me say that that's sexist bullshit, Jason.

It more just came to mean “lying,” which is dumb because the point was to describe something much more specific than that.

I keep seeing it like - asking for evidence pertaining to a metoo type thing is just more men gaslighting - implication being not that there is a male lie but that asking for evidence is trying to make someone doubt their experiences.
