Re: How did I miss this?

The problem I'm having is how the siphon gets started. The way you'd get a siphon started on earth is you'd suck air into the hose, using either your mouth or a pump. Or you'd submerge the hose, then pinch the end of it shut, and put it in the lower bucket. In that case, though, it's air pressure t...

Re: How did I miss this?

Well yeah, you will get a pressure drop along the tube due to friction and viscosity, as well as the pressure changes as the fluid ascends and descends through the tubing. Any source of fluidic head difference should be sufficient driving force though. Not where the hose goes above the level of flu...

Re: How did I miss this?

But we do all agree that just gravity is wrong, correct? A form of pressure differential is needed, right? Well since a siphon will work with two open reservoirs then no. A difference in fluidic "head" is the driving force required, along with the continuity equation and a feasible path between end...

Re: My skepticism is once again validated

Fun fact about allergies. If you want to get a good indication that someone has a gastrointestinal allergy to a substance you can't just do a prick/scratch test on the skin. You've got to do it in the rectum. I give blood for genomic studies on IBD, but I declined to participate in the allergy study...

one of my personality defects is the occasional irrational hatred; i.e. wanting to watch tim and eric get hacked to death by african child soldiers wielding machetes. i think it would be a potent blow against the inherent absurdity of absurdity, plus those guys suck, and the child soldiers could ke...

Re: H&R Idiocy - Blackjack!*

If so, that's an odd way of dealing with it -- how is "I got sick because I'm an emotionally damaged being who did too many hard drugs and had too much promiscuous sex" psychologically easier to handle than "I got sick because I caught a virus?" Well, maybe in my hypothetical he hasn't presented sy...

Sirens. very soft-core porn dressed up as Merchant and Ivory - style costume drama, with lots of naked Elle McPherson. And it's kind of funny, with Hugh Grant playing a sanctimonious prick, the role he was meant to play. EDIT: Mostly girl-on-girl porn, but some blind artist dude on girl porn, too. ...

there is definitely more of a demanding attitude at play. my brother in law tells tales of recruiting at career fairs for banking industry jobs (barclays, etc) and having kids not only come with their parents (one of whom asked if she could sit in on the interview!) but wearing t-shirts and sandals...

Zero Effect . Bill Pullman at his best, using Ben Stiller correctly (which is as a supporting role as douchebag stick-in-the-mud, and not letting him over-act), and fun quirky mystery. Also, Hugh, why do you hate the baby Jesus? Ronin was very enjoyable, and has been seen by everyone. Zero Effect w...

I'll shout out for The Final Countdown , a damn-near pitch-perfect cheeseball 80s patriotic technothriller-with-a-tinge-of-SF movie. Who doesn't want to see F-14s taking on the Japanese Navy at Pearl Harbor? That was super fucking awesome when I was 12. And was apparently adapted from a Star Trek: ...
