Re: Orange is the new President

Some parts of the internet says there's 31 active emergencies. (source is cnn with autoplay video so I'm not going to link it)

Trump already has 3, this would be no 4.

So ditto but even moreso.

Re: Counter-factual: Spanish Civil War

I agree with Arsen, but even despite a Spanish Civ course in college (and watching some movie set in the time period that I can't remember the title of and I don't think it's on this list , I don't think I have enough fine grained knowledge to really be sure of myself. (though that's rarely stopped ...

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

It's not hard to score a quick kill on US forces if you have complete strategic surprise. Everybody from Imperial Japan to Al Qaeda has been able to do that. The issue always is what happens next.

Re: How do you solve a problem like a MAGA?

If I had to bet, I'd bet Trump's approval ratings are soft. There's an underlying core for whom he can do no wrong or, more to the point, they don't care if he does, but the rest are lukewarm in their support and would care about his removal about as much as they would care if their favorite TV sho...

Doing the right thing is almost never rewarding politically, that why that one dude wrote the whole Profiles in Courage thing.

All we can basically count on now is the 2020 election gives us an entirely new set of issues to complain about.

Re: How do you solve a problem like a MAGA?

As long as Trump is prez, there's still the cult of personality among the core MAGAnauts, and outside that, enough hazy doublethink among right wing anti-anti Trumpers to believe that Trump is delivering the conservative goods and attacks upon him are just librul haterade. If he gets kicked out, I t...

I do think the Republicans assess correctly that replacing Trump with Pence thru either impeachment or 25th amendment means would collapse the wave function as such.

The thing is, I think they gave Judith Martin maybe a bit too much credit along those lines, though that part was the most fun.

I think it's unfair to compare Warren with Clinton, and I think she can beat Trump.

I also don't think she'll be as socialist as everyone fears/hopes she will be.

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

The Post is an eyerolly turd with an extreme amount of talent all sniffing own farts. It was possibly the first movie where Meryl Streep annoyed me. From what I understand, Katherine Graham had already long established that she was 'in charge' and not a debutante dilletante who had the big boss job...

Re: The Road to Damascus

If the Turks roll in and start slaughtering Kurds, it's not better. If you do a well-defined and planned pullout with negotiated settlements with the Turks and the Kurds, you can get something a bit cleaner. We couldn't get the Kurds and Turks to play nice when we were the imperial governor of Iraq...

It's kinda amazing to watch Team Blue suddenly become pro-war in the span of 12 hours.
You must have spent the Obama years in a place without TV, radio, internet, and newspapers.
That was pro-reasonable intervention and pro-kinetic military action, not pro-war.
This. Seriously.

*comes running in* I heard there was buggery planned? Unbridled! Not necessarily. In one of my parenting groups, a mom mentioned her son is into My Little Pony but wasn't sure if he should call himself a "brony" in case it had sexual connotations. A bunch of other people chimed in that yes, they're...

Yes, the judge is saying a $0 tax is not a tax (which gets in the philosophical a positive and negative tax are taxes, so why is $0 not). Therefore, since it’s no longer a tax, the mandate isn’t a tax and is unconstitutional. Which is a dumb argument. Unless he thinks something like 'the number zer...
