Re: Just the Tax

There's large bills down the road and there's large bills down the road. If you're talking about the deficit, that's an abstraction to most people. (And as NY Mag dude somewhat rightly points out, there's been enough seeming crying wolf over that that it's not hard to understand why new warnings mak...

Re: Just the Tax

Down the road a lot of people's cuts are also gonna get negated by the reduction in the inflation adjustment, not that most people know about that. Say, am I right to grok that the inflation adjustment reduction is regressive in its relative effect? In that it has the same absolute effect on everyon...

Re: JOYOUS SOLSTICE

Via an Iranian Facebook friend, I just learned about Yalda Night . (Y'all are geniuses so you probably already knew about it, but I didn't!) She described her own celebration of as a very pleasant gathering of friends and family with "watermelon , pomegranate , dried nut , (usually fried fish with c...

Thanks.

So I guess we just gotta wait another year for Ivanka's postcards. ;)

(a few other things I'd heard confused me about that too, though that's what I would have expected. Um, for it to be 2018, not to be confused. Though maybe I should expect that, too...)

Re: Just the Tax

I have intuitive concerns similar to Jennifer's but is there any difference in principle between requiring the purchase of health insurance and requiring the purchase of car insurance? The official answer, FWIW, is that you don't have to own a car, whereas the insurance mandate has no escape hatch....

I've actually seen a little uncomfortable commentary to that effect. I tend to agree.
What's the reasoning there?

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

WRT what Nicole quoted: It seems to be an argument of the category "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good". I think there's a valid point there. In general, I think "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" is an important consideration to make regarding decisions about policy and m...

Re fewer brackets. For "simplification"? I understand simplification for making it easier to do one's taxes and for understanding what you're in for to facilitate decision making. Do fewer brackets really accomplish any of that?

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

The mob is not a place for ideas. You see, that's the tautological part. Of course the mob is not a place for ideas cause that's how the mob is defined. Sanders supporters generally think that they can get what they want by soaking the rich and a $15/hr minimum wage won't raise prices because there...

Lessee. Moderates are not populists. Wonks...

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

I think it is true that to some extent the core message of the left is a populist message, but you can have an argument about the minimum wage that is an actual argument. The evolution of the neoliberal consensus contains many of those arguments and many of them that people of the left should like....

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

Ahh. If you don’t think populism is a thing I can see the disconnect. Take any topic, make an appeal to the masses that goes like “privileged elites have taken what is yours/are keeping you down it’s time to take it back” - that’s a populist argument. The original topic may have been immigration or...

If the Blues were less pathetic, maybe they'd ask themselves what Bill Clinton ever did for them. And they won't. Depends what you mean by "blues". Milquetoast centrist voters that mostly vote D but generally aren't paying too much attention? Sure. But progressives have never been comfortable with ...
