Re: Observations of the Random sort

I'm pro reserved seats for movies, without which one is completely hostage to sitting through commercials in order to get decent seats. But yeah like a lot of life recently you get more features with more hassles.

Re: Police Politics Poll

Another scenario I consider likely, with the way things are going, is that covid-19 roars through the country and without any plan or political will to stop it the war-zone hospital images and the bodies piled up pushes BLM off the front page and everyone who wasn't already going to vote against Tru...

Just saw online a sign in Spanish the gist of which was "Bars need your help. Since we can only have 1/3 the customers, please only come if you can drink 3 peoples' worth"

Re: Dreams (not those crushed by the weight of unfulfilled life)

I was in an episode of Frasier where Frasier and Niles were trying to outdo each other on conspicuous consumption, while also hosting a day of cultural exposure for underprivileged youths. One of them was trying to buy a Picasso ("but not a very good one" was the repeated callback joke), and I can'...

Re: When journalism goes bad

For crispy fried chicken, Popeye's wins fairly easily, though I personally don't like the original spicy version. Once in a while, say what you will about it, I get a hankering (as they say in Texas) for KFC original recipe, which is also my preferred next day leftover refrigerated fried chicken. W...

Re: When journalism goes bad

There are several places in LA that make claims about having the best chicken in town, Curious if you've been to Gus's. They come from Memphis/W. Tennessee and is for my money the best I've had. Saw that they opened a few L.A. area locations. Am curious if they have been able to maintain quality wh...

Which, by definition, means I would indeed be wearing a mask as a form of "signaling" or "messaging" ... but despite the unavoidable (and sometimes negative) political/social connotations attached to this, it's intended more as thoughtfulness/concern for others, and I'm dismayed to see that very no...

Not sure what the actual limit by law is (the higher-proof Everclear isn't legal here) but as a practical matter Bacardi 151 is the strongest thing I can get. Which gets one past the 70% mark but is not very economical. Fun quarantine project: is it possible with only common kitchen items to take a ...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

The order & pick-up thing leaves a lot to be desired if you have favorite brands or are actually choosy about which produce you want. I've found the occasional substitution to be enjoyably serendipitous. I would never buy "pancake and sausage on a stick" (it was substituted for corn dogs), but it t...

Yeah, it's a bit overplayed nowadays, but I can actually remember seeing The Matrix in a theater and being boggled at 'bullet time'. Holy shit that was cool. Love or hate the movies, there's no denying the Wachowskis set the new standard for action flicks. My take on The Matrix was that the story a...

Re: It's not the size of the screen...

Really enjoyed Dark, can't wait for the next season. Took a while to get into, at first I thought it gave away too much right away; it took until the latter part of the first season for any intrigue to set in because the 'what' is given away right up front but thankfully the 'how' turns out to be in...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

I am getting increasingly despondent. I ordered a couple small home-brew things from a local shop, advertising "curbside pickup", with payment taken care of ahead of time online. I only did so on the assumption that it was really curbside pickup, and would be as contactless as grocery delivery. Inst...

Re: What are you drinking?

Dug an old random home-brew out of the back of the closet. Last one from a few years ago. Was supposed to be an English Amber, but had sour contamination (which I noted in my notes already at bottling time). But I'll be darned if it didn't mellow out into a really, really nice sour so I drank the wh...

Yeah. Heart issues. It's almost like any respectable doc was saying that from the beginning. Also. News to me but we cant get some people off the fucking ventilators easily. To much lung scarring. Apparently the scarring isn't confined to a lobe but the entire lung surface. What do you even do when...
