Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

Is consonant y sometimes pronounced like "T"? I just spent a couple hours watching Dora -- and turned off the TV when yet ANOTHER episode came on (if they're going to show the same thing for hours at a time, I wish they'd do more of that live-animal show) -- but there was one episode where they kept...

Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

Anyway, there was a certain phrase I heard repeated twice in that episode -- in English, it sounded like "Santa beano!" Heard it once when a teenage musician looked under the tree and saw presents, and much later in the episode (presumably after the whatever-it-was problem had been solved) when a l...

Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

Dunno if I'm actually going to stick with this, or get tired after awhile, but: for a long time now, when I'm in the living room/kitchen/common area of our apartment but not actually "watching TV," I'll often have it on just for background noise, while I'm doing some housework thing or playing on th...

Re: Petty annoyances

Our cable box (originally scheduled to arrive at our house no later than 9 p.m. yesterday) was put on a truck in the nearby town of Doraville at ten this morning, per UPS, and that's the last we've heard of it.

Re: Petty annoyances

One good thing, though: Jeff said the bodega owner was ECSTATIC when he saw Jeff walk in today, carrying a big Tupperware box full of rolled coins. Gave Jeff $175 in paper cash without even bothering to count the rolls first, even though Jeff urged him to do so.

Re: Petty annoyances

Still no cable TV (I gather the overall connection in our neighborhood is fine; it's just that we need a new box). I had one of the Pluto channels streaming last night just for background noise while I did boring-housework stuff -- there is a channel that plays nothing but old Addams Family episodes...

Re: Petty annoyances

FWIW, our own personal-property electronic devices -- mainly the TV and our computers -- are fine, and we never lost our electricity, only our communication utilities. Only the modem and cable boxes, which IIRC are both company property rather than "our stuff" (we need not pay to replace them, merel...

Today was Jeff's official first day of being On Vacation (not that we're going anywhere, of course, but he is obligated to burn through a certain amount of paid time off before the end of his "fiscal work year"), and he spent the whole day running various unexpected errands, which he must continue d...

" This is what national decline looks like " ... Never has a U.S. election come at such a moment of national mortification. In April 1970, President Richard Nixon told a national television audience that futility in Vietnam would make the United States appear to the world to be “a pitiful, helpless ...

Despite knowing nothing about his son's condition, nor even his name or age, I'm going to guess he is very sick, because if he tested positive despite being asymptomatic, or having only a mild illness, Woolery would've used that as further ammunition for his "it's a hoax" claims.

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

A couple days ago, Chuck Woolery the Trumpster ex-game show host presumably felt proud of himself, when Trump himself retweeted one of Woolery's "covid-19 is a hoax" posts. On July 12, Woolery made yet another "covid-19 is all a hoax" tweet. On July 13, he tweeted "To further clarify and add perspec...

I’m stuck in the U.K. because of Singapore’s strict entry rules. I have an employment pass, but for all long term pass holders, you need government permission to enter, on top of a two week quarantine unless you come from a small handful of countries (Japan, NZ, Oz, China, Taiwan, etc.). So I’m try...

Re: The Enemy of My Enemy

Adam Bates posted an interesting take on "cancel culture" today: One of the most fascinating developments in the right wing's persecution complex is how much these people are starting to sound like the leftists they abhor. To hear them tell it, it's unconscionable that someone should be fired from a...

It’s not that other nations don’t want to welcome Americans, they just can’t. The point of a passport is that a sovereign power vouches for its bearer, but America can’t vouch for the health of their citizens at all. America’s public health regime is far less trustworthy than Liberia’s (which is ac...

That just reinforces the idea that they think Trump had some sort of stroke. The idea that they thought they needed to administer such a basic cognitive function test for an adult is pretty... And precisely how the doctors responded, for Trump to boast about it. This is a little old, but of course bad-Trump news comes in faster than anyone can keep up with: WTF was up with him taking a "cognitive test" at Walter Reed? (Given how he bragged about "acing" it, I'd wager he thinks a "passing a cognitive test" is equivalent to "scoring Mensa-level on an IQ test...
