Re: Why does Glenn Beck hate America? - continued

I sometimes wonder ... I remember reading that in one of the recent African genocides -- I think Rwanda's -- there were a couple of radio DJs who pretty much got the ball rolling with their broadcasts about why Our Tribe needs to kill everybody in Their Tribe. I gathered that was the DJs' intent, to...

Re: OFFS

What solutions are there to discuss? Even a temporary debt moratorium -- make the payments that are due, but don't take on any new debt for just one year -- will never happen. I saw a news story today about floating proposals for yet another bailout -- this time, the Feds bailing out states that are...

Re: Can you still pass a (written) driving test?

I only got 61 percent, but I mostly missed questions which (IMHO) you don't need to know to be a safe driver -- for example, so long as you know not to drive drunk, you don't need to know what percentage of crashes involve alcohol.

Re: OFFS

But I don't know if a level amount of debt is quite the bogeyman you're making it out to be, Jennifer. A level amount of "pay off your credit card each month" debt of the sort Lunchstealer referred to isn't a problem. A level amount of debt wherein interest payments alone eat up a good chunk of mon...

Stevo, you should do a NON-imaginary blog. Even cutting and pasting some of your best Hit and Run comments would get lots of hits.

Re: OFFS

Probably. I've got a "Samson in the temple" attitude toward this whole gigantic clusterfuck ... and I have no idea how the hell we're expected to even meet those bullshit government pension obligations, let alone all the other bullshit debt. And frankly, at this second if we did default I'd even be ...

Re: OFFS

Maybe partial default is the way: pay back foreign debtors to avoid the whole "war" thing, but American citizens on government pensions stop getting paid. (Though of course the government would never do that for fear of losing votes.) Well, that and the whole spectacularly immoral action thing. Aga...

Re: OFFS

Governments are worse than households -- if my fool self takes on far more debt than I could ever afford to pay back, at least my kids and grandkids unto the nth generation aren't forced to foot the bill. But still, I maintain that wasting money you already had in hand is better than wasting money y...

Re: What are YOU looking at?

I've watched the first two episodes of that new cartoon "Neighbors From Hell," and so far I am extremely disappointed. If next week's episode isn't an improvement I'm going to give up on it. Some of the plot holes are so huge, it's like one of my vanity authors wrote the script.

I'm with Thoreau on this -- wasting money you already have is still better than going into debt to waste money you hope to get in the future.

Seems akin to if I, applying for a writer's job, list all the places where my writing has been "published" and include places where I never wrote a professional article but they printed my letter to the editor -- I can't be sued over that, but nobody who knew the truth would be fool enough to hire ...

Re: OFFS

That depends on what you mean by "permanent debt", I should think*. Small levels of revolving debt to improve liquidity at any given moment may be perfectly sensible. Think of someone who has a credit card, who makes many day-to-day purchases using that credit service. Even if they're paying off th...

Thoreau and Jennifer: I guess I've never really understood why some people think debt is 1) universally a bad idea or 2) a moral failing. I personally do not think "debt" is a bad idea, but "permanent debt." Fine, borrow money to get an education or pay this emergency expense or expand your busines...

Re: OFFS

It's one thing to say that the federal government cannot and should not even consider defaulting on its debt. It's quite another to say that the current level of indebtedness, let alone increased indebtedness, is a prudent or even sustainable mode of government. It is, after all, possible to reduce...

Re: OFFS

Indebtedness should not be a way of life, but the same moral argument weighs against default as much as indebtedness. True; I'm not so much arguing pro-default so much as I am arguing against the idea of tax money being used to back risk-proof investment. But as a pragmatic matter -- ignoring moral...

But if those "risk free" bonds only qualify for that status because taxpayers will be forced to pay out no matter what, how is it good in the long-term to continue that practice? He said all combat troops out by the end of this August. Of course, he said nothing about peacekeeping troops, or occupation troops, or embassy caretakers or things of that sort.

And Afghanistan's mineral deposits will make some American mining company's shareholders very, very rich.

Re: We can win the war in Vietnam!

The anti-war movement focused largely on Iraq because they largely didn't care about Afghanistan. And we're out of Iraq now, or will be by August 2011 if everything goes according to plan. And really, what could possibly go wrong between now and then? Even if nothing goes wrong, it appears that "we...
