Re: OFFS

We do believe in rehabilitation, but only for people who already met a certain high minimum level of income, wealth or influence.

Re: Predictions for 2011

I predict that the public sector unions will fight back and manage to preserve some jobs, only they'll preserve the wrong ones. For example: public schools will lay off teachers or teacher's assistants but will NOT lay off any administrators, even though one administrator's salary could pay anywhere...

I'd like to reword Fyodor's question to "Suppose that for whatever reason [traffic, road debris, whatever], you're in your car and see a funnel, and driving away isn't an option. Then what?"

Re: Of course I've got a blog. Who doesn't?

Glad that's over. EDIT: Bit embarrassing, though; the guy introduced me as a much bigger deal than I am -- I've written op-eds opposing TSA, but he made me sound like a major researcher/journalist. Also he introduced me via my blog, not as a Guardian writer. I mentioned the Guardian, though. More th...

Re: 2010 Gone With the Wind

and "wedge yourself into the triangle-point under a concrete overpass" was better than all those options. Yeah, but there's been some video of people getting pulled out from under the top triangle-point of a bridge, because of venturi effects. As I've learned here. Turns out conventional tornado wi...

Re: 2010 Gone With the Wind

That was what I'd heard: never stay in your car, if nothing else lie flat on the ground some distance from your car, better yet lie flat in a ditch, better yet crawl into a drainpipe ... and "wedge yourself into the triangle-point under a concrete overpass" was better than all those options.

Re: Wikileaks - Diplomatic Cables Edition

What really bothers me about this matter -- and I've been trying to think of a concise way to put it and maybe pitch the idea to my British editor, but I'm still having a hard time putting my finger on it here -- is the utter useless pointlessness of it all: instead of telling the SD employees "You...

Just a reminder that tomorrow I'm supposed to discuss my latest anti-TSA column on some radio talk show I never heard of before:

Oops, when I wrote "NoStar" I meant "Number 6." Glad you're all right. But I'd always thought a solid concrete overpass made a "good enough if nothing else is available" shelter?

I'm guessing the odd shapes could be caused by super-high winds blowing the hailstones about while they were forming, and distorting their shapes based on the direction they tumbled.

Oh, hell, Warren. I saw on the news that bad tornadoes hit Arkansas and Missouri, but I didn't realize it was your part of the state. Glad you're all right, even though the tornado was most likely your fault.

Back then, van drivers didn't have the shoulder the burden because they'd just post signs requesting "grass, gas or ass." Then Edwin Meese and the war on drugs came along in the Reagan era, and everything changed.

We need more amateurs solving mysteries, though. I'd like to see a return to 70s-style mystery-solving in a groovy van, but I predict gas and oil prices will rise, making such travel impractical. Maybe McMillan and Wife could do it European-style and tool about solving mysteries from the back of a V...

most of them seemed pretty supportive. edit: from a rhetorician's pov, referring to disagreements as sockpuppetry isn't a convincing strategy. Probably right. I fear it won't matter anyway, though. Like I said on the "predictions" thread, it's worse than ever because now it's not just ordinary Amer...

Re: Groping Resistance Growing

Here's the bit I wrote. The commentariat thus far thinks it's unfair and crass, the way I insult the poor TSA agents by calling them "thugs" and whatnot. I posted one comment, but that's all.

Re: Predictions for 2011

I dunno, for the reason I make this prediction: I predict the broader rollout of naked-scanners will result in significantly more public resistance than we've seen so far. Well, I do hope so. More importantly, I hope the public resistance results in actual changes. For all the outrage over, say, TS...

So, it'll get worse in specific, very notable ways, you mean? Yeah. Like the sexually explicit groping -- that's an actual tangible worsening, not a theoretical one, you know? Well, theoretical isn't quite the right word -- I'm typing off the cuff here -- but immediate, obvious, and affecting a not...

Re: Predictions for 2011

DHS, especially TSA, will grow even more intrusive. Also, water will be... wet . :) I know that's a joke but, in all seriousness, I can claim that my prediction demonstrates an actual worsening of the status quo. Last month, when I wrote that anti-TSA column for the Brits, I initially pitched it as...

DHS, especially TSA, will grow even more intrusive.

The housing situation will grow worse -- from the perspective of those who think "Housing prices need to be higher" -- because more ARMs are scheduled to re-set this year.

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

Woke up thinking I was coming down with something nasty -- my throat hurt like hell every time I swallowed -- but no, it's just that the air in here was bone-dry. I've had the humidifiers going full blast for hours now; if you saw the clouds steaming out of it you'd think "Wow, the air in your place...
