Re: Star Trek Wankery

There are exceptions in both cases, but: for the most part, when watching TV episodes I prefer TNG to TOS, but when reading novels ( original novels, not novelizations of movies or TV episodes), the TOS offerings are far better than TNG (except for a couple of Peter David works). I have not been ab...

DP2 is great. Zazie Beetz is great. Just got back from it. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Wish they'd destroyed a little more of Vancouver, though. What do you have against Vancouver? I've never been. Toxic levels of smug. I see. Run off from Seattle no doubt. It's literally what happened when Seattle had ...

And it's Tillamook, which is, objectively speaking, the best cheese there is. It's the only thing Oregonians produce that doesn't have a superior counterpart from Washington.

That’s too bad. Ant Man is one of my favorites. The first Caps-free one I actually bought on Blu-ray. That and Doctor Strange are the only two that are straight up visually interesting and had the most interesting fights, but Ant Man is also just a great caper movie. And Peña is in peak form.

I had to google, because my mind brought up some really dumb ideas and I didn't think it could really be a Thing. It's a thing, and it's mostly as dumb as I thought. The ones that are spaghetti-strap-with-off-the-shoulder-sleeve thingies are... fine, I guess. A bit 70s but okay. The ones that are ju...

Yeah but you wash your hands and that meat will be cooked to temp right? And your knives and cutting board have been cleaned beforehand? Probably? Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

I dunno about better but the behavior is inconsistent with the “owned by the kremlin” narratives. You have to really stretch to make that fit. Not when you consider that he's actively avoiding the enforcement of a lot of Russia regulations, including the new sanctions he fought tooth and nail to ke...

Nice. I've only seen a flying squirrel once, and it was just 'dark, flyingsquirrelsized object comes into my line of sight from top right and stops at a tree middle left and as I'm moving my head/eyes to try to follow it, the blob moves out of sight around the trunk at squirreltreescrabbling speed,'...

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

I'm reminded of how the reputation of SF fans is "guys who can't get laid" and yet how much outright debauchery, up to and including orgies, happens at any sizable convention. Yeah, bathe daily and have a modicum of social skills and a willingness to strike out a couple times, and it's hard not to ...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

The actual answer is that WYSIWYG word processing is terrible. I type two spaces after a period, to signal that I'm ending a sentence. Then my document compiler takes that information into account when it decides the correct amount of spacing to put there. Hell, that's happening right now. There we...

In the beginning was the Word. Then came the fucking word processor. In the beginning was the command line . In the beginning Turing created the Machine. And the Machine was crufty and bogacious, existing in theory only. And von Neumann looked upon the Machine, and saw that it was crufty. He divide...

Been watching The Terror. Clearly inspired by research for Taboo; it's a fantastical dramatization of John Franklin's lost expedition. Pretty decent acting and as long as you can suspend disbelief for a rampaging spirit bear then the show's not bad. One episode left in the season and they are alrea...

I just assumed that it wasn't just making the jump to light speed, that she hyperjumped into the megacruiserthing. So the damage wasn't caused by the ship in hyperdrive, but by it coming out of hyperdrive in the middle of the ship. Given the way that the Supremacy seems neatly sliced in half by the...

So much retconning...so...much...retconning... Also, if going to lightspeed is so massively destructive if ther...
