Re: Alternate histories

The case requested was "a time when the security of the US got worse because we failed to intervene," not "a time when we could have intervened, but we didn't." Politics being what they were, there was no way it was going to happen. But, if politics hadn't been a concern, I don't think the conditio...

Last year federal officials managed to "lose" almost 1500 migrant children. No idea where any of them are. http://www.startribune.com/the-latest-fed-agency-says-it-lost-track-of-migrant-kids/480986621/ If we libertarians were in charge they'd be fitted with tracking collars so as to avoid any loss ...

That's the least of her problems. She better figure out how she's going to identify in prison.

I know at least a half dozen black comics who are probably writing jokes about this already.

Maybe the opposite of market failure, but I was actually taken aback to see someone using one of those Redbox kiosks at the grocery store just now. It seemed oddly anachronistic.

The solution is to have voluntary standards with complying restaurants permitted to advertise as such and extremely stiff fines for fraud.

Ford rewrote their programming to make a coup happen. They aren't truly acting on free will. Presumably he also deleted fireblank.exe from the relevant directory. I think that's ambiguous in the case of Dolores, Maise and Bernard. They are far and away the most self-aware an I haven't seen any clea...

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

It took me a while to realize why I liked the first Deadpool movie better than Deadpool 2. The humor, starting with the credits, was fresh in the first movie and came as a welcome surprise to most movie fare. The second one was probably as well written, directed, etc., but it no longer surprised. Th...

There's no little irony in the possibility that package delivery may end up being the service that saves an organization with a statutory monopoly on first class mail. (What actually constitutes "first class mail" is, by the way, an excellent example of the inanity of law.)

I'm just getting to the last episode of season 1. Am I supposed to have any idea what's going on yet in the Dolores storyline? Because I really, really don't. I don't recall how much of Dolores' story/stories were revealed by the end of Season One. Superficially, there was the dance hall girl...

Re: cars and how they get that way

The reason is that the public is not buying cars. They buy trucks and little trucklets that have horrible space utilization. I'm not sure what you mean by a trucklet, but my son's CR-V is very practical for his particular needs and is a comfortable ride for four adults. Texans drive trucks because,...

Re: Gentry from the block

Houston's no-zoning is somewhat exaggerated; it does have things like parking minima and building setback requirements. It would be very illegal to build Manhattan-style there. But Houston is also a weird comparison because land isn't as scarce there as it is in much of the coast, and also it just ...

Last I checked, England uses 220v / 50Hz current same as Continental Europe. The plugs may still be shaped differently, which is why most decent converters come with multiple plugs.

I was in Irving TX when it happened. The city is going full bore on highway construction as if the Roman Army needed it all finished by next week so they could invade somewhere. So Irving is pretty much unchanged from 1994? Except there's more of it. Re: US v European electrical issues, better safe...

BTW, when the topic of female jazz instrumentalists comes up the first one that comes to my mind is Candy Dulfer , but I admit she's also the only one. About twenty miles away from home this morning I start to hear a scrapping or grinding sound from the undercarriage of the car. So I call AAA and they send out a guy with a flatbed tow truck and he finds a piece of re-bar wedged in not far from the radiator. Car seems okay when I back it out of the...
