Re: Make School Hard Again

https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/college-labor-market/college-labor-market_underemployment_rates.html For nearly 30 years, a third of college graduates (all ages, not just new grads) have been in jobs that don't require a college degree. Yes, there are non-wage upsides to an educated public, but...

Re: Orange is the new President

I don't think the aircrew patch thing is a big deal or a deal at all. I think the likeness of a sitting president on a military uniform is a very big deal. It had to be at the very least acquiesced to by the chain of command and that's a problem, too. The UCMJ requires no overt disrespect toward th...

Re: Orange is the new President

If one wanted to put a positive gloss on the last several years, one could argue that the federal government is both so impervious and so broken already that it can withstand even an obviously unstable, unfit president, at least so far. Yes, he profited from Russian attempts to put the obviously wea...

Re: The Abortion Thread

As the philosopher Ron White said, you can't fix stupid. And we'll never rid the world of stupid people because there are more of them and they breed more than non-stupid people. More importantly in this context, the law can't (and even if it could, probably shouldn't try to) solve all the various w...

Re: Make School Hard Again

Yes, foreign languages should begin being taught in elementary school. That said, if you want to drastically cut down on college applications (which I do) while giving a well deserved advantage especially to bi-lingual Spanish speaking college prep students (but any widely spoken language will suff...

Re: Make School Hard Again

I've watched several of those Yale courses. I highly recommend the Intro Old Testament course. The philosophy offerings, not so much. I think I watched part of the Old Testament thing -- it's been so long now, I can't remember -- but even if I had every bit of it committed to memory, I STILL am not...

Re: Make School Hard Again

I'm all for rigorous standards, but that cuts both ways. Good in math and science? Great, but you still need a substantial number of classes in courses requiring significant reading and writing and, preferably, a foreign language for a B.A. or B.S. (No, computer programing languages don't count.) An...

Re: The Well-Dressed Man

And now for something completely different, my wife actually didn't remember to ask me not to wear the madras sports coat at our son's graduation tomorrow. However, because there's likely to be expensive cigar smoking on a hot day at some outdoor locale, I'm going with the seersucker suit, instead. ...

Re: The Well-Dressed Man

If you're wearing any sort of athletic shoes with any sort of non-jeans long pants, even or maybe especially if they're khakis, you're probably a high school teacher, most likely math or gym. Aside from their value while doing something, you know, athletic (even including walking for exercise), athl...

Free contraceptives should be part of any policy: Pro-choice, pro-life, whatever. Hell, they should be part of education policy, law enforcement policy, foreign policy, environmental policy, fiscal policy, monetary policy, you name it. Ditto for free vasectomies and tubal ligations. https://sconten...

Re: The Abortion Thread

I'm not a neutral observer, but I don't think it's unfair to say that following Row and Casey, the abortion rights side has correctly taken every attempt by abortion opponents to restrict the legal availability of abortion in any way as a step toward outlawing abortion outright and has, in turn, fel...

Re: A Game of ... THEY KILLED WHO?!?!? (hbo spoilers)

My complaints are more along the lines "It is certainly possible, even in the real world let alone fantasy fiction, for a good person to go bad, or a sane person to lose it (especially if that sane person has a family history of insanity) ... I'm not complaining THAT Dany ended up the big bad villa...

Re: A Game of ... THEY KILLED WHO?!?!? (hbo spoilers)

It's fiction and some suspension of disbelief is necessary even in the most realistic fiction, let alone fiction in which the dead can be resurrected, people can face-shift, there are dragons and at least some people can survive raging infernos. Sure, but even though I'm happy to accept a fictional...

One assumes you're not conferring some sort of natural rights to the zygote, are you? Because while it is biologically true that the zygote is an individual member of H. sapiens, it's also not in possession of almost all the features that we generally think of as the features of people. One assumes...

Re: The Abortion Thread

I have zero interest in arguing this with Jennifer, but I'm one of those people who think that abortion is, if not murder, nonetheless a form of homicide because I consider on non-religious grounds that the blastocyst/zygote/fetus/infant/child/adolescent/adult/geriatric is still at bottom a genetica...

I didn't look at any spoilers. I just thought it would be funny if Bran got the throne. As for Jamie's arm being visible, that's just finding a parking space.
