Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Honestly, the best way to manage the wealth tax is tax cap gains as income (inflation adjusted) and eliminate estate tax step-up basis. [/b] What does that mean? When you inherit property, it is immediately valued at the price on the day you inherited it, not the purchase price. So if you inherit $...

Actually, I'd say there's one mysterious aspect to Biff's success: how he didn't run afoul of organized crime at some point in his impossibly successful betting spree and end up dead. It could perhaps have been for the same reason casinos hire high rollers to serve as whales. Get people thinking th...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Right. The constitution required amendment to allow for a federal income tax. The constitution says something about direct taxes must be apportioned by population in the states. The income tax doesn’t do that so it requires an amendment. There is no federal property tax and the argument is wealth t...

Re: Have you accepted Nothing as your lord and savior?

I've come around to the point of view that the generational shift which is going to happen when PLO cold war terrorism is a distant or nonexistent memory but Bibi & Trump BFF is recent memory could alter the political balance. You have to get beyond the Muslims-as-bogeyman thing, first. As long as ...

Interesting, the feds day that coal is safe and wind is dying, while a private utility is going whole hog on renewables, even excluding subsidies, based on cost.

Aside from possibly Mumia, who on that list are we supposed to like? And why isn’t Jonathan Pollard on the list?

Kevin Williamson has gone off the rails since he got fired by the Atlantic. A little while ago, he said he loved the laws of Switzerland and thought it was the best governed country in the world. Now he compares Warren’s wealth tax* to the liquidation of kulaks. He says one should abscond to Singapo...

Glassdoor is self reported from my understanding so I don't know how much influence companies would have on that. I'm sure there are specialty positions that make it tricky to get good samples of that position's salary, but I wouldn't think a barista is one of them. I’ve used Glassdoor for my own s...

Productivity growth has been barely positive for like 15 years now. That's a real thing. The amount of cash firms are sitting on when flush instead of investing in the new big thing - that's also a real thing. Lots of people seem to behave with real dollars as if they don't know what kind of invest...

Has Tyler Cowen ever walked back and reexamined his ZMP hypothesis? Seems like a massive fuck-up and blind spot. With employment and wages where they are it's pretty clear his hypothesis was 100% wrong.

I feel weird having to point this out, but the Oscars are not a relevant indicator of the quality of a film or contribution thereto. The Oscars are prom that only the popular kids are invited to.
Which made Moonlight's win and the way said win was announced so satisfying.
