Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

What happens to campaign funds when lesser candidates drop out? I know they pledge their supporters to a candidate, but do they then pool funds? Because this could be some sort of DNC multi-pronged fundraising campaign that presents as grassroots but is actually targeting all the core Dem constitue...

Re: Blame it on Rio - 2016 Summer Olympics

Yeah phenotype intersex stuff is hard, but my guess is that the burden could be on the individual to show that they should compete in the special category rather than the general. Also the ‘men’s’ category should be open to anyone who thinks they can compete at that level regardless of gender. They...

Re: Blame it on Rio - 2016 Summer Olympics

But Semenya is a woman, was born a woman, so can fairly compete in women's events. Just because she's a genetic freak*, doesn't mean she doesn't count. * Unlike every other elite athlete, I guess The particular nature of her freakness is at odds with the special category of "woman's sports". Why sh...

Re: The State is Over! If You Want It

Sears is amusingly bad at this. If I go look at something on their website logged in, they will come back and email me when it's on sale, say, 2 months later. I don't know that that indicates 'bad'. If you didn't buy it before, maybe the reason was that the price was too high. They lower the price,...

Re: Putin on the Writs

Also, the vehement Trump support has increased since the election. There were a number of "hold their nose" Trump supporters that are now all/mostly in. Are there? I see Rep. congress critters accepting Trump as team captain, and falling in line. But I'm not seeing the general public jumping on his...

Re: The State is Over! If You Want It

The funny thing is that in some ways, the answer is "the great majority of things we do in a (reasonably) free-market economy". I have heard repeated stories of visitors from Communist countries being introduced to the West and not being able to grasp "But how do you know how much anything should c...

Moynihan has a story about private security firms taking over police duties in Detroit , where the city can't afford to retain its cops: It's become a booming industry here in recent years, with the largest contractor, Securitas, reporting 25% year-over-year growth since the city's bankruptcy. Re: Blame it on Rio - 2016 Summer Olympics

If we're going to have women's sports (and I very much think we should) we simply have to have measurable standards to decide who qualifies as a "woman".
I am of the opinion that as far as athletic competition is concerned, testosterone levels are an essential metric.

Cards on the table - if there’s a Russian set of things that undetected could “influence” an election .0005% and a subsequent public reaction that amplified the message to create the idea that democracy is hacked and 20% of all votes are somehow tainted, did the Russians do damage to democracy or d...

You libertarians all think that you can just have a low-speed chase of a White Ford Bronco without any public infrastructure because the market will provide. Not so. Not so...

Bran is the Three Eyed Raven, he holds the memory of man. To erase Bran is to erase history. Extending the episode was a bad call IMO. There were longs stretches of boring. Pretty much all the slo-mo and piano could go. I remember two great single-battle episodes at Kings Landing and Castle Black. T...

I thought the whole point of Twitter going to 280 characters was that we wouldn't have to deal with confusing abbreviations anymore! ;) I despise Twitter for several reasons. Erasing people from voter registration databases is probably far more effective than you give it credit for. The only time someone is going to find out is when they show up to vote, at which point they're told "No, you're not registered, go away". And what recourse is there? Some might let you regi...

Has there been a problem with people getting hassled by the cops for sleeping in their cars or is Denver virtue signaling?
