Re: Putin on the Writs

Americans worrying about Russian forces in close proximity is like the Scottish worrying that there are English bases nearby. When you share a head of state it's all good.

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Seizing corporations is dangerous talk.

You get dangerous talk when people see systems failing and see no corrective movement in play.

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Surely there must be things intermediate between no punishment and "fire everyone, tear down the building, and sow salt into the ground." But we're more likely to get a reaction leading to the later scenario if the misdeeds that others have pointed out in this thread continue to go either unpunished...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

The thing is with companies 99% of the employees may have had nothing to do with any crimes. So to shitcan it for the actions of a few would be a pretty ugly thing since you could be putting thousands out of work and even possibly hammering towns with a large company presence. Think Flint but in th...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

As I've said before, calling yourself a capitalist and then saying "but only if capitalism does exactly what I want" is a little like saying "I think truffle-hunting dogs are a great way to find truffles; that's why I plan to keep them in my living room so I can get truffles from the comfort of my ...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

If Elizabeth Warren didn't exist, moderate Democrats would have to invent her. "Come on, donors, is THIS the person you want as Majority Whip? No? Then donate to my PAC, not hers!"

Re: Inequality

If early farmers had it worse than hunter-gatherers then why did they choose to farm? Were they already in large enough groups that a chieftain could force it upon them? Or was it possible that there were real downsides but even bigger upsides? I think it's the farmers outbred the hunter-gatherers....

Re: Inequality

Oh, I can believe that quality of life declined at some point AFTER the adoption of farming, but there must have been an initial improvement or it never would have happened in the first place.

He thinks this country was founded by people who passionately supported taxes on imported goods.

Re: Trump's Bogus Argument to Deny Green Cards and Citizenship to Immigrants who Play by the Rules

Maximally aggressive, inflexible application of the rules is surely not a uniquely Trumpian thing, but it is something that they can be quite confident that the boss won't punish them for.

Re: Trump's Bogus Argument to Deny Green Cards and Citizenship to Immigrants who Play by the Rules

High-trust society is probably the single biggest, most important part of America. These dipshits don't get that. They don't trust a lot of people, and think we won't be great again until we get rid of the people they don't trust. The fact that nobody will trust the ones who remain hasn't yet occur...

The scientists who built the atomic bomb in WWII spent the rest of their lives on the public teat, either directly as employees of the weapons program and/or state universities, or slightly less directly as private university researchers with federal grants and federal consulting gigs.

Obviously the best society is one where I eat fresh salmon and fresh wild berries by a stream that no other tribe challenges ownership of, work commensurate hours, and enjoy the services of healthcare providers who work capitalist hours for socialist pay.

My wife makes good baklava. Hold gryllicon in So Cal and she'll make some.

Or hold it in Vancouver because we like hanging out there. We could go to a concert at the Kobol Opera House from BSG.

Cooling down: a more palatable thread?

Some of the threads are getting a bit heated, and some Gryllers are going through hard times, so I want a less controversial thread.

What do you guys think of that garlic spread that Middle Eastern restaurants have? I can't decide whether it's too strong or too bland. It's weird.

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

I took that to be "society we" rather than "government we", but I see the ambiguity.

We (English speakers) need a few different first-person-plural forms. We'll add that to gender-neutral pronouns and phonetic spelling on the list of linguistic reforms.

Plus the use of Shire Reckoning.

Who said Shem was calling for coercive regulation? If CBS gave holocaust deniers an hour of prime time, businesses would pull ads so fast that there would be sonic booms. Ads haven't been pulled from Facebook because it's not a platform where the connection between content and ads is as obvious. You...

Actually, per Executive Producer Order, all White House meeting rooms are named after reality TV stars. The Snookie, Trump, and Анна Чапман rooms were in use, so they did the firing in The Situation Room.

I've said this before, but I think the biggest way the past couple of years have changed my politics is that I think we really need a serious crackdown on white-collar crime. I understand that/why white collar crime is genuinely more difficult to prosecute than other forms of crime. But I think we ...

Doctors have figured out how to treat a heart attack in a centaur.

So if Jadagul's friend ever gets that surgery he'll have access to quality healthcare.
