Re: Inequality

Obviously everyone should move to the same Goldilocks area, just big enough and attractive enough to have jobs but not so big and attractive that it's expensive to live in. If they don't, it shows a lack of personal responsibility. And if they all do, well, the housing prices will rise and wages wil...

You can do salary on like glassdoor. There is a variance in median barista wages between Cincinnati and Chicago. but it's maybe 10% compared to hyuuge variances in cost of living. You put too much stock in "like glassdoor" numbers. I...actually agree with Warren. Companies fight tooth and nail to h...

Re: Food

As a practice run for Christmas I butterflied a turkey. It cooked very fast, so I accidentally overcooked it a bit, but that's why we do the practice run. I cut out the backbone and put the bone and associated meat into a pot with a bunch of vegetable stock that I had lying around. I reduced the liq...

Re: Inequality

Don’t know that I have a solution, but it certainly isn’t putting non academically inclined people into 4 year programs. It would look more like trying to get those people trained into skills with market demand. Amen to that. Community colleges are a big part of the answer. One under-reported story...

Re: DB's absolutely amazing sci/tech thread

Even if you couldn't do so with the moon, could you start a fire with enough starlight , then? Personally, while the explanation made sense, I thought one of the whole points of using telescopes was that they made target objects, like low-magnitude stars, brighter. In principle, sure. But I can't e...

Re: DB's absolutely amazing sci/tech thread

I'm not convinced that they're right about the reflected light. They're right about a lot of stuff in there, but if I reflect direct sunlight off of a mirror before focusing it with a magnifying glass I should still be able to start a fire. So I'm not convinced that they're right about the moonlight...

My favorite joke about a Soviet leader is that a guy stood up in Red Square and shouted "Kruschev is an idiot!" He was given a twenty year sentence: Five for illegal protests and fifteen for revealing state secrets.

Re: The author is dead, but is the performer?

I won't contest DAR's observations about certain patterns of human behavior, but the validity or accuracy of those observations is not necessarily a useful lens for interpreting a song. A song could play off of very real patterns or completely unrealistic patterns, to great effect either way. A song...

Re: The author is dead, but is the performer?

The lyrics do leave room for the other interpretation. Not as much room, but still. For starters, the line "The answer is no" is followed by his refusal to take "no" for an answer, and people can make something of that. Also, the "What's in this drink?" line has been explained in terms of historical...

Many people are now engaged in the annual tradition of debating whether it's OK to listen to "Baby It's Cold Outside." On the one hand, I'm exactly the sort of person who should be offended by people who are offended. I should be out there saying "But look at the context of when it was written! Look...
